A lot of apartment complexes here are going tobacco-free due to the fires being started either by lighters or by unattended cigarettes. If you are a smoker they will tell you that you can smoke in your vehicle, but you cannot smoke outside or smoke in your apartment. If you are caught smoking in your apartment, it is grounds for eviction as per the contract.

A lot of new government apartments are being made tobacco-free from day one as well as those that are freshly renovated to meet new building requirements.

A few apartment complexes around here still allow smoking, but they are generally older apartments, and the renter will not get their deposit back on these apartments due to the smoking. It is to pay for the cleaning bill when they move out.

I guess if a person own their condo they would have to pay a fine. I wonder if this law is hard to enforce, I be some people will not want to report a person as it could get messy!

I don't know, but I can smell it in pretty much any place wherever people smoke.

Is it state law where you live or is this federal law? If it goes into effect, how do they intend to enforce it outside of automatic eviction? But then again on the flipside, if the renter is paying to be there, they should be allowed to smoke there as well, but on the opposite end of that other renters will say they are paying to live there as well and would prefer a smoke-free apartment complex.

So who is right? Perhaps a compromise would be that in an apartment complex one building or group of apartments that are detached from the others can be designated as smoking apartments, specifically. As now even a certain amount of hotel rooms are designated as smoking rooms. They can use the 10% rule.

It would not be possible to have part of my condo smoking and non smoking.
Some people own their unit , I do , and some rent . The guy that did smoked moved out and my building no longer smell like smoke! There for units in some buildings and two building have 5 units. I think people living in the building will have to report a person is breaking the smoking law. I bet some people will be too intimidated to report certain people! Like a body builder!

I know smoking it horrible for kids , the government is also going to made it a law by 2014 we all have to use those curly light bulbs! The government is slowly taking over every we do! I think smoking is a disgusting habit! I read that cigarette buts are really toxic for baby and small children!

Adults shouldn't be smoking around children anyway, so I agree with the law.

But the law about the curly bulbs? Not so much. I know they're good for the environment, but I can't afford to replace all the regular bulbs in my home with the curly ones - they are rather expensive, and not as bright. I like very bright lights.

You know, these CFL bulbs last much, much longer than the standard incandescent bulbs. They make a significant difference in the utility bill. So you would be saving money by buying these bulbs in the long run. I've lived in my house for 2 and half years, I still haven't replaced any of the bulbs. The bulbs are quite bright here, no problem at all.

They may be slightly more expensive, but they are worth it since they do save you a good amount of money in the end.

But curly bulbs have mercury in them and I do not like the idea of them going onto our landfills! I recycle my HA batteries as they have mercury in them.
