Personally, I believe all dogs should be allowed to bark without fear. I don't mean they should feel they have the right to bark for hours on end, but it's a valuable tool when they bark when they hear someone coming up to your doorstep. I don't care when Jake barks, I'm just glad he's being a good guard dog, but if he keeps howling because something out there is really spooking him, then I have to step in and either figure it out and fix it for him, or command him to hush. A few barks to get your attention is great, it's when the dog won't stop that it gets inconvenient, lol. If I had my way, I'd let Jake bark all day, but I have a crotchy old man living next door and it doesn't take much for him to complain.
Using electric or citronella collars will teach the dog that ALL barking will cause a negative reaction. You can get one that comes with a remote, so that you can let him bark a few times, and when he doesn't listen to you when you tell him to quit it, then you press a button and he gets squirted. I don't like electric collars at all, but citronella collars are a safer alternative. But if you tell him to quit and he ignores you, he has to understand the correction is coming from YOU, not some random reaction from the band around his neck.
