My audiologist told me there are no provisions for the hearing impaired in Obama care.

Why are us HoH folks still stuck in this crack in the system?

Military considers us disabled, but SSA does not? No GI Bill or SSA benefits.

Employment .... phones are a big problem. Productivity subpar with hearing folks we have to compete with.

Not trying to be a whiner, just trying to understand why.

I believe it's the same deal with the healthcare in Canada. I guess healthcare and insurance follow the same rules, and hearing issues don't fit the qualifications to apply into those rules. Though maybe I'm wrong; we don't pay a "visit fee" or examination cost when we go to the Audi, we just pay for the supplies (ear molds, batteries, HAs, etc.). Same with doctors; there's no examination fee, just costs of what was done or prescribed (dental work, medications, etc.). You walk in, tell the receptionist you have an appointment at such-and-such time, and after your visit with the doctor, you just walk out, unless you choose to schedule another appointment next month.

I've lived a sheltered 23 years, so I'm just now understanding the "adult" things in life, so I might be a bit mistaken. Healthcare confuses me; I'm not entirely sure what it does, except that if you're got a honking ear infection, you don't have to stress. Just walk to a walk-in clinic, get it looked at, and walk out without paying anything. Only thing you pay is the antibiotics or ear drops at the pharmacy.

In the USA you have to pay for doctor visits if you don't have insurance. And even if you do have insurance you have to pay a co-pay of like 20 bucks or something. Obama is going to be here today I believe and I wish I was able to get a ticket to go see what he is going to say about it.

There is nothing in Obama's proposal that would limit the criteria already used by SSA to determine eligibility for benefits.

Few insurance policies cover audiological care. Technically, it is not medical care. It is not provided by a physician, a PA or a nurse practitioner.

What about vision exams, physical therapy, mammograms, x-rays, and lab tests that aren't done by physicians, PA's, or nurse practitioners? Those are covered by insurance but they wouldn't be considered "medical care?"

Yes, even at the VA hospital we pay co-pay. It's usually $15 each visit to primary care, and $50 each visit to specialty clinics.

I just don't think that it's right to take money from someone and give it to someone else. That is what is going on here. What right does Obama have to tell private companies what to do with the money they make? First banks, then power companies, then automotive, now insurance companies and doctors. Why throw in that student loans have to be supplied by the government?

I've never had a problem getting emergency care which should be available to all. But if you have a cold or stomach virus, keep your but at home, drink fluids and eat chicken noodle soup. Your body will fight it off, you don't have to see a dr for the sniffles. I CHOSE to not have health insurance for 10 years. I now have insurance and CHOSE to pay for it. Don't force me to buy something.

Eye exams are not covered under most insurance plans.

My insurance covers exams by an ENT but not by audiologists. No coverage for hearing aids. I understand that's typical.

Maybe we should all write to our state representatives. :)

Some insurances cover audiology as well; I know of a workplace that offer such coverage in Canada. Not most though.

Yeah, my eye coverage is minimal. We have to wait 2 years before glasses are covered.
