Attention Whores?

Vampy, the scenario you're describing doesn't represent the majority of people who have bipolar. When you describe it the way you have above, you're belittling and insulting those of us who are living and trying to cope successfully with this disorder. Bipolar isn't an excuse for bad behavior. It's a serious mental illness that can severely impair one's judgement. I hope to God you are never diagnosed with bipolar -- it is an awful illness that I wouldn't wish upon my worst enemy.

Good post, Hear Again.

It just baffles me how some people use celebrities as examples and it's horrible examples because they are constantly in the spotlight. Each mistake is compounded onto each other. One tiny action is over-analyzed so imagine a bipolar parent's little mistake would be over-analyzed to bits & pieces.

Celebrities are easy targets to use, simple as that.

Hear Again, I admire you so much. You have such grace and dignity discussing this sensitive topic. Namaste, Hear Again. You have a big fan now. Tactile smile!

I normally reserve my judgment as I feel it is not important and not my place to pass judgment at all. I have to say that it is not your place to say this quote at all. You have no right to pass such horribly misconstrued generalisations on bipolar people who are parents as well.

Just because they struggle on a daily basis even with their medications, they do care for their children. It is actually those who have sound of mind that harms children more than those who have been clinically proved and medically intervened.

Your quote paints a really bad image of the average bipolar patient and I hope you retract your post with an apology.

Awww, :ty::hug: I just wish some people wouldn't make generalizations or judge the behavior of all people with bipolar on the actions of one.

Tactile smiles back! :)

I never said "bipolar". I said "illness" which could mean a number of things.

:gpost: Both of you!

It would seem that the media portrays bipolar disorder in such a negative light ALL the time. It's no wonder people have such awful ideas about what the illness is like. I think we need to have more exposure on ways people are coping with the illness successfully instead of all this "newsworthy" stuff they put out there when someone is suffering goes off their meds and crashes or what-have-you. There are many people who are stable and are doing well, and I wish more of this is seen. It might make people stop and think a little more. At least, I can hope.

I couldn't agree more, OB! :)

You're referring to mental illnesses. It's discriminatory to say that a person with a mental illness shouldn't have children.

You say tomato, I say tomatoh.

It is the same thing.

Please educate yourself before more misconstrued generalisations is posted. It is bad enough that there are some horribly misconstrued posts about the bipolar facts.

Like I said, please think twice before posting anymore gross generalisations and reconsider retracting your posts or consider educating yourself first before posting.

Thank you.

Excellent post, Mrs. Bucket! :)

Well, Let me put this out for once and all -

If one was to have bipolar disorder, PTSD, or various types of mental illness - They all should get help one way or another.

Excuses or not, It is imperative to recognize the differences of one who is in serious need of help or one who is simply craving for the attention to amuse him/herself. By having mental illness or disorder, that is an entire different issue which is directed at the issue as a whole.

When someone gets an attention just because they wanted to for no reason, That is like an entirely different thing because they are bringing themselves into the melody of trying to revoke it one way or another.

So, with that, I am not disregarding anyone for that matter but there is a fine line for seeing the difference between these two.

Exactly, Jolie. It is a fine line and it's not always easy to do. But, you have to realize that the person who is ill is NOT responsible for his or her behavior. In the case of bipolar disorder, they are in such a state that they are unaware of their actions or they are unable to refrain from acting on their impulses.

My gripe, if you will, is that alot of people are quick to judge the person without finding out the reasons behind the crazy behavior. I also believe in second chances. In the case of Britney Spears, it is my sincere hope that she will participate in her treatment, so she one day get her kids back and lead a good life.

I am Bipolar, and have ADD, PTSD, and GAD. I take medication and I function very well on my medications, and I am very med-compliant. I take Seroquel, Wellbutrin, and Xanax. I am currently not on any ADD medication because I am not in school nor am I working, because I am taking a break from college to get my physical health problems taken care of.

With my medications, I am able to function, and I have so much more self-control than I ever did without medication. I am able to stay calm, I hardly have episodes (manias/depressions). I get depressed sometimes, but it is pretty mild most of the time. I've been able to stay out of the psych ward, and I see my shrink once a month.

I should be in therapy, but I need to find a therapist that signs. I don't feel comfortable with a therapist that doesn't sign because then I have to have an interpreter there, and I worry that the interpreter will judge me or will break the confidentiality. I don't trust interpreters in this kind of situation. It feels weird. I want to look into DBT (Dialectal Behavioral Therapy) to help me with my PTSD and GAD. My PTSD and GAD are what are giving me the most trouble lately. CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) doesn't really help me.

But overall, I do pretty well on my medications.

I don't like all the news and gossips about people like Britney Spears. I feel bad for Britney. I hope she gets help and get on medication and get back in control of her life so that she can get her children back. Same for other celebrities and other people struggling with Bipolar Disorder.

Bipolar disorder is not a fun illness, and it can cause you to get completely out of control without medication. You can do things you will regret later. But with medication and therapy, you can get back in control and you can do really well, and function really well. You have to maintain control, through medication and therapy and being mindful of what you do.

So please don't judge people with Bipolar Disorder.

Thank you.

Know what another sign of being an attention whore is?

Using multiple accounts to get your point across. That means... say something. Then sign on under a different name to say the same thing so that people think that more than one person agrees on the same idea.

... like some people might be doing in this thread. :type:

I wish to post anonymously. Thank you. I haven't even posted or said anything on my other account in this thread.

Interesting thread...

I notice some people confuse Attention Whores with ADD, ADHD or Bipolar.

I hope this quiz will helps to find yourself what it is really about.

You Don't Need Extra Attention

You're perfectly happy with who you are, and you don't need attention to feel good about yourself.

You prefer to let your actions and accomplishments speak for themselves.
Working hard to get people to like you is your idea of a nightmare.

You've got a lot going on, and anyone with half a brain will notice that on their own!

You come across as: Confident and serious

People may wrongly think you're: Stuck up and shy

Vampy,

If you read carefully, "Anomymous" doesn't have the same writing style as OB or myself.

As for using multiple accounts, it wasn't me because I didn't know ADers could do that. :dunno:

Besides, why would someone go through the trouble of starting a new account just to write a single post?
