Atlanta vs. Nashville

For the past couple of months I've been looking to get out of Memphis, and I've been eyeing Atlanta to move to. I've always loved the city, and think its beautiful down there. I had found that Georgia Perimeter College, in Atlanta, offers an ASL terp program, and had been looking to attend there. But just recently I started thinking Atlanta may be too much of a change for me, and that Nashville might be a good compromise. I'm more familiar with Nashville and it wouldn't be as overwhelming, its smaller, and I'd be alot closer to my family. I've found that Nashville State Community College also offers an ASL terp program, too. I'm just not quite sure at this point. So does anyone have any input or advice for helping me to decide? Any experiences in either city that would persuage or dissuade you to move there?

Ever think of giving good ol' Knoxville a try?

UT Knoxville (home of the Vols, I say heh) has an educational interpreting program available, but I dont know about classes offered for other specialities i.e. legal, medical and general interpreting offered within UT Knoxville and other community colleges in the Knoxville Metro area.

And bonus is Tenn. School f/t Deaf is located in Knoxville so it gives u a chance to kill some birds with just one stone that u can take advantage to practice ur ASL skills there....

But if Knoxville aint yer cup of tea, I'd take Nashville if I was in ur shoes.

Yeah. Knoxville isn't my thing. For some reason it always reminds by of TN's version of Minnesota.

central, gpc has long experience with interperter programs. i have alot of friends who took interpreters program at there. they successed their goals. i dont know about nashville college's background.

my finacee graduated at univ of tenn with interpreter program. she said 4 yrs college was very long way to finish yet she was very successful with her professional jobs.

central if i were you i would socialize with deaf people so u can pick up the signs quickly at same time as you take the ASL program.

atlanta has hurricanes, nashville has tornados...which one do u like better? hurricanes or tornados?

I grew up with toronadoes. :D

I've got lots to think about, and I'm going to do as much possible research, and touring as possible before I decide.

Shake my head, oh yea we got tornados!!

Hey cental I have lived in Nashville most of my life and I was born and lived in few sub.. in the state of Georgia.. I dont know which one would be good for to enroll.. As for in Nashville I know few colleges such as Nashville Tech and few others and in Georgia I knew really few cuz few of my aunts went to school.. One of my aunts went to school to be major in asl but instead of went to nursing to be RN.. Its more difficult to decide which its more better!!!

aj, if you dont mean sports, then we DO grow with tornados. more than hurricanes.

u do grow with hurricanes and tornados.

Nashville is a nice city with that strong honky tonk feeling (in a nice way). :D Definitely an Atlanta-wannabe city right next to Charlotte (NC).

OK, I have to agree with deafclimber that the Interpreting/ASL programs at GPC (previously known as De Kalb College) being around much longer and is still going strong. I don't recall hearing about NSCC having those programs - must be fairly new. UT-Knoxville and Maryville (Tenn) College have those programs for years. I don't know if Tennessee Temple and Chattanooga State still have the programs now.

Cental, maybe we can help if you tell us what you like about the two cities and what you like to do? Music (i.e. R&B/Hip-Hop, country, gospel, etc) nightclubs, sports, shopping? What is more important to you that one of the city to have?

Chattanooga is another town I'd heavily consider if I could find an available program there. That is my birthplace, and has always been my favorite place to visit, since moving.

Brian to answer your question about what I like about the two cities, is I really like a good music scene (mostly underground), culture (not just diversity, but local culture), good places to get outdoors and recreation. I know that Nashville is the place to go for musical diversity, but Atlanta is home to alot more of the music I like. For some reason, I can't get past the thought that TN is one of the most cultured states around, particularly the eastern rural parts. It really is hard to determine which I'd have be more comfortable with, but as far as convenience, I know my way around Nashville more or less, and it is alot smaller than Atlanta. I get lost too much when I'm down in Atlanta. But I also enjoy Atlanta alot more. I think there is alot more to see there, and alot more nature areas. Its a tough call.

Taking a look at their websites, I found both Tennessee Temple and Chattanooga State both offer ASL interpreting programs. Chattanooga State's looks pretty unimpressive, and would only serve to help in language instruction. Tennessee Temple seems to have a good reputation, but I cannot find their curciculum, and I'm not sure how I would feel about attending a Christian College.

Wow. I never knew there were so many different choices. I was excited when I found that GPC offered such a program.

Dekalb County hates me. I know this because everytime I drive into it, I get lost, and it starts raining really bad.
