Athletes with Tibet Flag to be Banned

I'm trying to figure out...who is enforcing these rules? The Chinese or the I.O.C.?

The IOC did not specify whether a Chinese athlete or a foreign competitor of Tibetan origin flying the Tibetan flag would be regarded as patriotic or propagandist. A spokeswoman said that there had been no discussion internally or with the Chinese authorities about use of the Tibetan national flag. Asked whether athletes would be allowed to hang the flag in their rooms, she said: “The village is an Olympic venue so it falls under the same rules and regulations of any venue which would mean that anything in there would be judged on whether it was a provocative propaganda initiative.”

The fact that the IOC has still not qualified the exact interpretation of “propaganda” means that some athletes remain confused about what they can say during the 16-day event without being sent home or stripped of a medal.

Unfurling Free Tibet banners or wearing Save Darfur T-shirts at Olympic venues are acts likely to be regarded as a breach of the charter, which was introduced after the American athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos gave the Black Power salute on the podium at the 1968 Games in Mexico City. But there are still many grey areas and concerns among human rights campaigners that athletes’ right to free speech will be curtailed to avoid embarrassing their Chinese hosts.

The Olympics seems to be the "Battle of the Bulge" for Tibet . . . or is it not?

I think that's wrong. That's not fair for Tibet to not use its flag while other use their own flags in the Olympic, China is very retard!

We can ruin an 2008 olympic for China to make worst year of Olympic like tell athletes to stay in their home countries and boycott of 2008 Olympic.

Wow, unbelievable... no freedom for Tibet to support their own country and showing their own flag.

Well, they are still undetermined about that part.

Yea, but we in America allow southeast states using the Confederate(sp?) flag?
We're not into propaganda like China is. We also aren't having problems with those walking around with the confederate flag.

If we were close to having another Civil War and were hosting the Olympics in the upcoming months, we might act the same... but who knows, it depends on the IOC. ;)

And the IOC DID award China hosting the Olympics, subject to a cautionary note about their human rights history. I think it remains to be seen whether it was a good idea to award them the Games.

IOC is enforcing the rules since it is considered "propaganda" against China.

I was in China last month and found it amazing how on TV, the Chinese government will censor the news broadcasts from American TV networks that are covering the issue in Tibet. You are watching CNN and all of the sudden the story comes on and the TV goes blank!... and comes right back as soon as the story is over. I could not imagine living over ther.

Yeah just like when IOC awarded Nazi Germany the Olympics as well.

Well it still doesn't make any sense to me, maybe China shouldn't have its flag up in the Olympic due to their willing to challenge one of their own entity.

This issue has been brewing for years. No major country wants to do anything about Tibet, so when the athletes do it themselves, the IOC steps in so no one picks on poor communist China. Screw them, they should have been expelled from Tibet years ago. Athletes should either look for a way to display the Tibet flag anyway or boycott, plain and simple. Let China get really embarassed when half the world doesnt show up.

Yea or even relocating the Olympic 2008 to somewhere else instead of China! :laugh2:

I wish that Olympic 2008 will relocating to Hong Kong.
