First of all, ASL is a visual language that doesn't have a printed form.

Second of all, if the paper is graded based on English structure and grammatical rules, then it is the deaf students' responsibility to make sure the paper is written following the grammatical structure of English.

If the student wasn't able to write good English, did he/she get tutoring or additional help? If not, then the blame lies with that student. If the student did receive help or tutoring but is unable to master written English then that student needs more schooling to ensure his/her writing levels ar at par with the grade level he/she is currently at.

I can understand about ASL being the deaf person's first language and mastering English is very difficult. That is why it is VERY important for everyone in the deaf children's lives participate with the development of their literacy skills both in ASL and English to ensure their success in both languages.

If that student wants a career that pays well, his/her English must be written well.

That's why I strongly believe against the oral only approach. Too much information is missed while the deaf child is youg and that can result is struggles with literacy skills.

If that deaf student was exposed to ASL since birth and hasn't mastered English, it is possible he/she has a learning disability?

This is my point of view. When you sign ASL is no difference if you write english on paper. ASL paper is not the same as ASL sign. Even tho that is like english paper as english sign, As I see, as english sign is not a language itself. ASL is more a language. ASL is more as a concept by what you are saying. ASL signing and english paper match what you are saying. In some way, as ASL need the weight how you use english. Sometimes, if i write english as a start and I have to practice to know what's ASL go with. I have a good friends who all are deaf include 3 children. All are very good english paper, but they raise ASL signing. All of the are fully deaf. It's bec family involvement, they didn't leave up to the teacher to do their job, and parents laid back, parents involve children.

Think like this way : ASL is dialect form whilst english is written form. This boy shld have no business writing ASL on the paper but since he s young, he still have chance to learn to how to distinguish ASL from written english.

ASL is a language.

English is a language.

They are not the same language.

If the teacher assigned a paper to be written in English, it must be written in English.

Even if the student wrote the paper in perfect French, that would still be a failing grade because it wasn't written in English.
