Hi. I go to a mainstream college, and I have an interpreter, but I have no deaf friends to learn all the new ASL signs. I noticed my interpreter using some signs that I did not know before. Is there something out there that I can "read" to learn all the new signs?

Not sure how many signs you are having probs understanding, but ask terp to fingerspell or explain when you see a new sign. Another good resource is www.aslpro.com. It's an extensive online dictionary. Good luck.

It's mostly the names of countries, but that link looks helpful, so thanks!

Ah, country names! The ASL names of countries are quickly changing. Some people use the "old" name signs, some people use the "new" name signs. That can be confusing. You should probably have a conversation with your terp to find out which signs he/she has been using (old or new?), and which ones you are familiar with. Then, the two of you can agree which ones to use, and how to use them (such as, do you want them spelled first).

Some of the "new" signs are actually the signs used in that country for their name. It's like hearing people in the US say, "Germany" but the people who live in Germany call it "Deutschland".
