i have a deviated septum. and i never really thought about it, but i do know that the ears, nose and throat are all connected. could something having to do with my septum be interfering with my hearing ability?

Ask your ENT doctor to tell /explain to you - your specific condition.

I do not think that is possible and I'll explain why but it's best to ask your ENT but I do have personal experience with the deviated septum bit.

When I was 16 I was quite the hot headed teenager and didn't control an impulse that led to a broken nose. :) A girl was making fun of my speech and I tried to reason with her and was nice, asking her why she felt the need to do this and that I'd appreciate it if she'd stop. She just egged me on and at the last minute I shoved her and it ended up turning into a fight. She busted my nose pretty good...
as a result I had to have my nose fixed through plastic surgery and also had it done for cosmetic reasons not related to the broken nose. I had a rather large "italian" type nose-it looked JUST like lady gaga's and since she's become famous I do regret getting it done...it did look better on me, now that I'm 29...I would have grown into it but that's for another thread I guess...

My nose after the surgery was made smaller-however, with all surgeries there can be complications and I ended up being one of the unlucky few to deal with a complication. My septum deviated-it can happen after a rhinoplasty. As a result I had to have two more surgeries to fix it and it's still slightly deviated. An eye sore to me but most do not notice it ( I hope ).

With the deviated septum I've had my yearly hearing exam since I was 16 and there has not been a change at all in my hearing loss. It's been the same. I do not think a deviated septum would cause a decrease in hearing if that is what you're asking. If it's something else-I wouldn't know.

But I hope this brings you some peace of mind :) It's still crooked and my hearing has not dropped after all these years.

if you do find an answer and it's different than mine and is from the ENT I'd like to know myself if that can cause issues with hearing although I doubt it.

It may be related if you have cranial facial issues. For example, I have a deviated septum and I have an ear pit (a mild defect). These are embryo developmental abnormalities. I'm a little off. But everyone here already knew that.

For the OP. Deviated septum can be connected to hearing loss indirectly if it causes more sinus infection and thus problems with the eustachian tubes. It would be conductive deafness.

One of the reasons I love this place...you learn something new everyday just about.
had no idea...now I do.

mmm i do end up with a lot of sinus infections, whats an eustachian tube? part of the ear? im not sure if i have that problem. i hear just the same when sick as i do when well.

i dont think i have cranial facial issues. my deviated septum is from when i was about 6 and my mom broke my nose. but she didnt know it was broken, so it just stayed like that. and when it looked broken, i never got to go back to the doctor. i only touched base about my septum with my ENT breifly, and he said that we have to worry about one thing at a time.
