A mechanic who left a workmate totally blind, deaf and crippled after spiking a bottle of Coca-Cola with antifreeze was jailed for 15 months yesterday.

Keith Lamb carried out the prank in an attempt to stop Martin Bingley sipping straight from a bottle meant to be shared with other employees.

An antidote could have prevented Mr Bingley, 46, who is married with two children, from permanent damage had it been given within days.

But Lamb, 45, remained silent after his colleague drank the solution and almost died as doctors struggled to establish the cause, Sheffield Crown Court heard.

Lamb, from Leeds, admitted causing a poison to be taken with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He poured around 2 in of antifreeze into 1 in of cola remaining in the bottle, telling another colleague it would catch Mr Bingley out and "teach him a lesson".

Timothy Stead, prosecuting, said: "The affect on Mr Bingley's family has been profound. They have lost him as a husband and a father."

Andrew Haslam, defending, said Lamb had thought Mr Bingley would immediately spit out the drink. "He regrets the prank went so tragically wrong. Tragedy is the best way to describe this case."

This is really absurd and it's so hard to even fathom anyone trying to pull a prank and pouring contents that is obviously poisonous and deadly in a drink....

It's definitely really sad and so tragic that this victim will no longer be able to see, much less hear and being crippled...I can almost imagine the state of confusion and depression that this man must be going through now--

It's  !!

Hes idiot for doing that!! he deserved go to jail but 15 months isnt enuff!!!

What wrong with people? Anitfreeze is poison and should not be mess around with on others, That some deadly prank to play with on someone.

Everybody knows to not allow dogs to lick or drink the pool of anti-freeze off the street.

That was not a very good joke.

There are more positive, better and safe ways to pull a prank joke on someone and it will be 100x more funny and much more safe.

He should have gotten more time than 15 months. He should have gotten 25 to life:

1. Pour Anti-freeze

2. Keep his mouth shut when emergency doctors were fighting to save his life.

3. He is not so sorry the prank went tragically wrong because he would have reacted differently but that still doesn't give him the right to pour anti-freeze in the pop.

He knew dogs don't lick or drink a pool of anti-freeze off the street.

Oh gosh, that stuff could have killed him and yet that man only got 15 months for that?....That's not enough, he should be punished more, it not something you can joke around with....That man has to live for the rest of his life being deaf, blind and cripple and that man only get 15 months? *shaking my head*.....

I dont understand why the judge give him 15 months in jail. It isnt enuff. I hope the family of the victim will sue his azz!!!

You know what they should do to this guy...

Put him in a tiny cell in solitary confinement, with no lights, and REALLY good soundproofing. And give him the "silent treatment"...basically, that means nobody speaks to the prisoner, and the guards even wear socks (not shoes) so as to not make noise going down the hallway, and everything else is soundproofed as much as possible.

Trust me--that would make 15 months a hell on Earth that will be as effective as life in prison.

:gpost: Make that for 25 to life.

8 months of the "silent treatment" for the author Dostoyevsky was quite severe, even though HE had light in his cell. 15 months with darkness added on would likely break a person.

You got a good point, Rose Immortal.

I know that the U.S. soldiers who were Vietnam veterans, some of them lived in total darkness for 4 straight whole years from the time of their P.O.W. capture to their release by the Paris accords. Some got sunlight and some did not get sunlight at the infamous prison best known as the Hanoi Hilton also the scattered P.O.W. camps throughout the Vietnamese countryside as well as possibly in some quarters of the urban city centers in Vietnamese society, until the tough U.S. P.O.W.'s were returned home to the Land and the Home of the Brave.

I am sure Saddam Hussien in Iraq tried the same technique with the U.S. Troops who became P.O.W. to isloate them in the dark and give the P.O.W.'s frightening hand to hand combat beatings, tourture etc which the U.S. Troops endured with no complaints and stood with the American steel of resolve until they were rescued or returned home to the Land and the Home of the Brave.

I don't know about the soundproof part but for sure.....

The darkness envolepes the P.O.W. prisoners that even after returning Statesides.

They sleep with the lights on and may think they are going through tourture sessions when in fact, it happened over 20,25-30 years ago. The memories are vivid and the pain can be felt like it happened just yesterday on a Thrusday morning or a rough beating Saturday or a Sunday night. It is way too real to the P.O.W.s even after over 30+ years.

God Bless our P.O.W.'s and our M.I.A.'s worldwide. I pray for them.

Sorry Miss Delectable, for going off-topic for a few mintunes here please..... Thank you

Not knowing the entire story nor if we even know it was really a prank, 15 months seems lenient for attempted murder.

*shakes my head*
I don't see it as a prank. I see it as an attempted murder. I am sure that he knew how dangerous it was for a person to drink it. 15 months in prison isn't enough geez!

15 months?????!!! Looks like we have nother incompetent judge on the loose. I bet if that guy was caught cheating on his taxes he would have been given 15 years.
