Another sleepless night....

I do believe stress is a factor. I'm not sure how to help you in that area.

Having said that, I get tinnitus from time to time (several times a month) and more often than not, its musical tinnitus.

What I do is, when I've had it up to here with it (because it lasts for days at a time) I purposely play other music, music that is at the other end of the spectrum of what's playing in my head. Its playing low in your head? Play screeching opera. You get the drift. And, at a much louder volume you'd normally listen to or feel to. It really works for me. It can be a temporary fix, but I do it as much as I need to until it passes for a while.

Hope this helps some.

A numbers of thing can cause tinnitus , stress is just one of them.

Yes, a number of things can. The reason I mentioned "stress" is because the OP asked about it in her first post.

Yes, I do believe stress is the major factor....as for playing different types of music, I don't "play" music, I'm profoundly deaf. The music I "hear" is songs I heard before becoming deaf. Along with the ringing, screaching, roaring...on a daily basis.

Some hearing people cannot go to sleep unless the TV or radio is still on...and if you see/think that they are asleep...and cut the TV off, they automatically wake right up...they cannot sleep without some noise. And that's something I don't understand....Seems to me that hearing all the nose on a daily basis, they would be able to sleep when it's "quiet"...

I cannot remember awakening in the AM without a song still in my head..from the night before. I've also found that whenever I've had a stress-free day, I'm able to get to sleep faster....and avoiding loud noises, such as motorcycles and jet planes flying very low...I do remember going to the Daytona Bike Week, and the roaring of the motorcycles were in my head for days!....

So, I believe that TWA and Alleycat are right, it's mainly stress and loud noises. Something that is basically "life in general", that we cannot avoid all the time, even tho' dealing with it escalates as you age....

I do agree in that it seems to escalate with age. I didn't use to get it as often as I do now. It used to be maybe 1x a year (college-age), then 2-3x a year, then 6x a year, now monthly. I'm not sure why. I actually feel less stressed in my life right now than I did 20 years ago, and happy, actually. So it doesn't make sense. Maybe it's that I've lost more hearing now than I had 20 years ago? And the brain compensating for what I no longer hear? That is the basis of tinnitus ..

I wonder if tinnitus is like phantom hearing for the deaf because we either never heard it or lost it?

Sort of like phantom limb, the brain remembers but does not register that the limb is missing.

By the way, RR, hope you can find a solution.

Music and more

Hoping I can get some feedback here....I have musical tennitus. Last night was one of the worst episodes, and I'm at my wit's end, could not sleep, so I'm feeling bad today.

Anyone else suffer from this? How are you able to "stop the music"?...Am wondering if stress could be a trigger factor?

It impairs my ability to think clearly and concentrate after a sleepless night of music. And as I've gotten older, it's escalated. Friends/family say "you look tired...get more sleep!"...Wish it were that simple....

I've yet to discuss this with my ENT, but have made a point to bring it up with him at my next appointment. But I don't foresee a solution to musical tennitus that's only in your head and no one else can hear it.

Hello RR, wow I know exactly what you mean, when I told the Drs that were working on me at Johns hopkins, when I lost my hearing , they sent me to a psyciatrist because they thought I was hallucinating..I hear music, radio (like with the DJ and everything) people talking to each other, dogs barking, on it goes on and on..well let me tell you. after 3 days of testing by the psychiatrist, he said i have something called "Memory recall". It is a real diagnosis. It happens when people were talking or hearing alot bebore they went deaf...were you born deaf? I lost my hearing completely 7 yrs ago. OK so what i found out is the brain when it is deprived of normal hearing will start to "replay" things it has heard in the past. I can not hear a thing not even my own voice YET I have NEVER had a quiet moment in my head since I went deaf. So I know...Yes stress will make it worse and oddly enough reading will quiet it a bit but it has never stopped for me in 7 yrs so I feel so sorry for you because i understand. It's funny when I realized I never hear anything that was after i went deaf...the music, talking, ball games complete with the announcer..laughing..are all from before 7 years ago. I have found no medication to stop it and have been told i must learn to manage it on my own..so...I try to exercise, read or take a long bath to calm down before bed time..it helps just enough..that I can sometimes fall asleep. OMG I hope you can find some things to help you i tried all the meds they only made it worse. So good luck and I hope you find a way to get some rest..ya know i thought maybe losing part of my brain would finally stop the "noises" but no...UGH !! (and I tried accupuncture-nothing)
I wish you Peace, and rest I know.. I just about went crazy.Midnight♥♥♥

Thanks so much!...I avoid drama like the plague....and have found myself really enjoying solitude moreso than being around people!...But that's hard to find with 3 teenagers..:D...they do understand how I feel.
I'm just gonna try to bite the bullet, find more time for myself in quiet places, avoid stress as much as possible too...

I use a TV to distract me from the noise. I know there are foods that increase it, as well as stress.
