Alley or nope?

Do you have the alley behind your backyard?

I was just curious if any of you ADers have the alley behind your backyard, or not? If so, do you use the alley? What do you think about the alley?

Since I've moved into more city center, so alot of houses has the alley. My property is one of them with the alley, but my property is not able to enter from the alley except a small sidewalk between my garage and other neighbor's property which are blocked by fence. I am considering to switch my garage from west front to east front instead to take more advantages of my front yard.

So do you have alley? Do you use it? What do you think about the alleys?
 
It doesn't really matter for me.

I've lived in a house with an alley only once in my life. Out of all 6 homes I've lived in while growing up, only one had a back driveway that's accessed from an alley. I didn't really have any opinion of it.

Today, I might have a different opinion if I actually experienced it as an adult. :dunno:
 
No...I used to live in rental house that has alley behind my house...I mean my neighbor's house...4 houses on one lot. I don't really like that idea...but rental is ok...
 
An alley is standard in the Northeastern states (or "colonial" states, if you will). In the midwest, we had no need for it except in the "historical" sections.

In New Orleans, there are no alleys. I found great concern. "Where to do we put the garbage cans?" You put them in front of your house . . . how unpretty.

I do prefer alley ways. Putting your dirty laundry in front of the house is not welcoming to your guests. Hospitality is an art.

Baltimore being Baltimore, I cannot access my alley from my building. I have to walk around the entire block to dispose of my trash. (Note to self: get an apartment with more accessible way to dispose trash)

Good point to have an alley! It help to beautifization our neighbors :)

You will like the alley a lot if you like big yard, the alley reduce the length of the driveway on the front yard. You will only have like 15 feet driveway at back with plenty of yard in the front, even you can have backyard too. That's why the alley are so beneficially, and there are more reasons than that :)

I used my alley to park my and my husband's SUV behind our house when we hosted the big cookout to leave parking spaces for our guests.

Yes, the trash is picked up in the alley which is great. However, the recycling bins are picked up in front of the houses which doesnt make sense.

I dont have a problem with my alley.

It varies on the house.

I've seen houses with short front-driveways and long back-driveways.

I have a friend whose parents have a long driveway from their alley.

Yupp true, but I hate my yard as what it is today. It's like I don't have a yard, but whole entire of my yard are driveway to my garage that standing far back of the yard just like my house standing far back of the yard too. That's why I was creating this thread to find people's different idea about the alley.
