Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Announces 2010 Award Recipients

The Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (AG Bell) today announced the 2010 recipients of its highest association awards, recognizing individuals or organizations who make a significant contribution to the hearing loss community.

Established in 1890, AG Bell is the only national organization dedicated to supporting children and adults who are deaf or hard of hearing who use spoken language and hearing technology to communicate.

Begun in 1963, AG Bell's awards recognize individuals or organizations whose efforts have made a significant impact on the hearing loss community or have raised public awareness of hearing loss issues. Past recipients include Internet pioneer Vinton Cerf and former Miss America Heather Whitestone; U.S. presidents and elected officials; and organizations such as the National Geographic Society, AT&T and ABC News.

The 2010 award recipients are:

The Alexander Graham Bell Award of Distinction - Representative Chris Van Hollen (D-MD). This award recognizes an individual or organization outside the field of hearing loss who has made an outstanding contribution to hearing loss issues. Congressman Van Hollen has been a strong proponent of full federal funding of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) through legislation introduced in the House in September (H.R. 3578) and of fairness in costs associated with hearing technology through the Hearing Aid Tax Credit (H.R. 1646/S. 1019), among other issues related to individuals with hearing loss.

The Volta Award - Ms. Joanna Nichols and Taiwan's Children's Hearing Foundation. This award is given to an individual or organization who has made a significant contribution within the field of listening and spoken language. This award recognizes posthumously the life work of Joanna Nichols as well as the ongoing work of the Children's Hearing Foundation (CHF) which Ms. Nichols, along with her husband Mr. Kenny Cheng, established in 1996. The CHF is largely credited with revolutionizing deaf education in Taiwan by being the first organization to offer a listening and spoken language alternative to children with hearing loss in that country, as well as raising awareness throughout Asia of the listening and spoken language option for children with hearing loss.

The Honors of the Association - Inez K. Janger. This award recognizes an individual who is directly involved in the hearing loss community and exhibits proven dedication toward the goals and purposes of AG Bell. Among Ms. Janger's many accomplishments at AG Bell, she is a past president of the AG Bell board of directors; the founder of the AG Bell New York Chapter; spearheaded the strategic analysis, restructuring and streamlining of AG Bell's membership and chapter operations; oversaw the merger of Auditory-Verbal International, which is today known as the AG Bell Academy for Listening and Spoken Language; and lead the design and development of AG Bell's acclaimed Parent Advocacy Training program that has provided more than 700 parents with the resources to guide their children's public education. The PAT program is being relaunched this summer at the AG Bell 2010 Biennial Convention.

The Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing helps families, health care providers and education professionals understand childhood hearing loss and the importance of early diagnosis and intervention. Through advocacy, education, research and financial aid, AG Bell helps to ensure that every child and adult with hearing loss has the opportunity to listen, talk and thrive. With chapters located in the United States and a network of international affiliates, AG Bell supports its mission: Advocating Independence through Listening and Talking!

*gag*

Any of those awards go to any Deaf ASL user or any people who have contributed to the signing community or ASL programs?

I seriously doubt it..

No new news. Same old as always. They just prefer to have Deaf and Hard of Hearing to listen and to speak as speech. :barf: The AGBell will be around for a long time with no change at all. Here we are still fighting for our Deaf rights as Deaf ASL users. :(

AGBell is fucking moron, that's all I care.

Of course not. Why would they? AG Bell supports listening and spoken language. Would DBC give an award to the creator of the CI?

That is what creates a divide...

I dont know what DBC would do..they are all for promoting BOTH...ASL and English while AGBad doesnt.

No, they won't. The goal is to award those who speak and hear well with their "hearing" abilities.

I don't hear NAD give awards to deaf people who speak or hear well.

I know that one of the organazation, AFA or DBC, (can't remember which) are profoundly against CI's. They said that childhood implantation should stop altogether. I can not accept that. I believe that is taking away the rights of a parent AND taking away the right of a child to learn to hear. And that is unacceptable.

They say they want bilingualism, but only their way. ASL and written English.

Deaf pride will always be proud of being deaf. So don't be suprise if they are against CI. Rather they want it to be illegal or not, I don't know, but as far as discouraging people from implanting babies with CI and encourage parents to be proud of Deaf is expected from them. Deaf gene run in my family like a heritage so I am proud deaf. Doesn't hurt me at all if I ditch all my hearing tools.

Anyway, I never read DBC being totally against CI. personally, I think it IS a torture to teach deaf how to speak and hear (or what you would say, lipreading) without any hearing tools like hearing aids or CI.

I thought DBC promoted or supported CI users who use ASL. I read that somewhere..I would have to find it.

Well, I still hate the AGBell organization especially after the Pepsi commercial incident.

It doesn't matter, I was one of their "vision" for the deaf (oral-only deaf) and I don't think I would have won any of their awards. Also, I think their award would be toward those who write something that would promote them (like how hearing aids/CI/oral-only "help" me hear or help me with my dream type of thing)

I believe it was AFA that has asked for a moritorium on CI's for kids, and a woman named Ruthie....something (sorry on phone and working from memory) who was so against CI's.

I personally can not support an organazation that is against CI's, just as I can not support one that is against ASL.

I will have to do some more reading up on the DBC and if there r any blogs against children with CIs, I will tell them that's wrong. They can be against the CIs but not against the people who get them especially children.

Like, I amagainst the view of oral- only which AGBell supports but I am not against the children who r being raised oral-only or the adults who chose to be oral-only as long as they don't hold audist views.

I am shocked and dismayed that Kokonut did not win an award. This is an outrage!

;)

One can't make money on charity without pissing off people. They only give awards to congressmen and politicans. This is classic lobbying.

To me, AG Bell is more about dollars than oralism and resistance towards ASL. This chase for for the mighty dollar, profiting on fear of deafness, is only easy to detect for the deaf population, the rest is too easy to trick. We see lots of this kind of charity bussines in africa, where westerns profit on poor africans. One don't necessary get rich, but this creates jobs for many idiots. The same game, just different players and victims.

To raise more money, NAD should perhaps start charity to aid oral deaf victims. Make campaign with oral deaf people with wide big sore eyes and enormously fat lips, half the face lowered, bleeding from infections behind the ear, cared by movie stars like Deanna and Marlee and some calvin klein models acting deaf. Get economical support from people who want to buy feelgood. Give awards to infamous congressmen that hunger for attention.

DBC is not more against CI than the whole deaf population. For them to be against CI it has to be in a charter, and it's not. Members of DBC holds different views. I think you are a bit oversensitive on this CI thing? It's natural that AFA have a more hostile stance toward CI in general, as CI and audism often goes hand in hand. Even you have to admit it.

But, hey, we are talking about AG Bell here, they have far less support than AFA and DBC among the deaf population. Among parents, I am not that sure..

I still think CI's in babies is wrong.....Just don't believe anything should be stuck in someones head by choice (non emergency) without that person's consent
