I used to be a long distance runner. I would run around 5 miles every day, regardless of the weather. Then I got married and had to work at least two jobs while going to school full time...then came a baby...and another. Needless to say, I stopped running because my schedule was extremely hectic and it was too hard to find someone to keep both kids while I did my daily runs. And I miss running so much- I feel free when I run. Now that the baby is older I think I can start again. It will be a challenge because I'm a single mom and will have to be creative on finding a way to do it.

But - I need some advice. I know I will need to start slowly. Should I do brisk walking first? Light jogging? Any ideas on how to include a 6 year old and a 1 year old into my daily runs? I know I can use a jogging stroller for the baby, but how can I involve my 6 year old?

Thanks.

Involving your kids at such a young age is probably "okay", but kids need to have their own fun.

Does your 6-year-old obviously need exercise or is he getting his own exercise from his daily activities? Since you mentioned 5 miles, that would be too much for your kid... even one mile is too much.

Is there usually someone home? If so, then you can leave your kids at home when you do your exercise. If you want to take your 1-year-old with you, then a short trip would be better in case the kid gets fuzzy and you can bring him home quickly. You wouldn't want to make him sit there for hours just so that you can run?

As for yourself, it would be wise to start small. Start some place like your neighborhood... around one block. See how it feels for you. Do that for a week. If you feel you are ready to go further, go 2 blocks... then 3 blocks.

If you don't know how far the trip is, take your car for a drive. Reset the odometer and drive around one block. Use that to help you determine how far you're running.

Near where I live, there is an exercise pathway that goes through a park in the woods. I've already done the math. If I were to go from where I am and walk/jog all the way to the park, then jog around the park and return back... the whole trip would be almost 7 miles.

When I was at RIT, I found out that Blockbuster Video was exactly 4 miles from RIT. So, on a boring day... I would take a walk myself or with a friend to the mall, Best Buy, Target, Wal*Mart, Blockbuster, then back home. The mall, Best Buy, Target, and Wal*Mart are out of the way and add a couple miles. So, the full trip would be about 10 miles for me.

I, too used to be a runner and Vampy is right, you start off small. His suggested exercise method is sensible.

If you don’t have anyone minding the children at all … how about a gentle then brisk walk first with the 6 year old walking with you (depending on how she goes) & the younger one in the jogging stroller, until the 6 year old attends school. (I’m not familiar with the starting age of attending school in the US). Then increased to jogging, when you only have the young one in the stroller. :)

Get a joggers stroller! I have seen plenty of people jogging with their kids in a joggers Stroller.

It is a bit expensive. but a good investment to your health.

Several my friends have it. They tell me their child can not wait for the ride. and you can Run free again.

Thanks to everyone for taking the time to give me some good advice! Guess I better go shopping for some really good shoes.

I am with you!!! .. Only way.. that I am find someone babysitter my girls.. so I can have chance to out hiking.. but Now I have treadmill and still problem because girls want walking on my treadmill :squint:

....walking on treadmill for one hour eveyday or every another day.. I got lost 20 lb. :D

Lot of fruits and Vegs... One glass juice or milk and 1 water gallon 80 oz per day!!

try avoid bread, rice pasta etc.. till you complete goal to number weight.. then can eat little

Good luck to you and me too.. of course anyone here ader too ;)

I saw on Opera that one time a mother was walking on her treadmill...and she didn't know it but her 1 or 2 year old baby walked up behind her and got her hand stuck in the belt...it ripped her skin off, exposing the bone. So beware of that :/.

Yep, for me it is not about losing weight - it is about running. I love to run and miss it. Feel like it is too hard to commit to it now because with two small kids and being a single mom, it's hard to find someone to watch them at least 3 days a week for at least 30 minutes. I hate running in a gym and I refuse to let the gym daycare watch my kids because I don't know who the workers are (and they change the workers all the time). I'm too picky about who watches the girls. I wish there was a way they made a stroller for both girls (6 year old and 1 year) old that sort of has a battery or motor or something so I don't actually have to push - just hold on and run. Since I have such bad luck sometimes, it would be my luck I'd push the super fast button and then will end up zooming all over town, screaming like a manic. :)

Isn't caring your kids enough exercise for you? ;)

As for the treadmill, it should be set up so that no one can sneak up behind you and in a separate room where no one will come in and bother you.

When I was younger, my mom used to have a treadmill in the garage. We converted the garage into a storage space since we never parked our cars in there. She had the treadmill 10 feet from the door, but it was facing the door. The door led to the kitchen. Whenever she used the treadmill, she would always make sure that the door was closed. If anyone opened the door, she would know immediately cuz it's right there in front of her. She also set up her workout schedule so that she has 1 hour of her own time when my dad is home... which was usually during the week from Mondays to Fridays.

A few years later, all the kids were old enough to know to stay away from the treadmill when people are on it. So, my mom could safely use the treadmill without worrying that anyone will do something dangerous.

that is great that you are a runner. It is very important for you to stay healthy because you have to be there for that baby for a long time to come!

Look on line for an article called "Sweating makes you smarter". That proves my point that exercise is essential. It is a cute story too.

You definitely want to work your way into it slowly. The torn muscles or ligaments will defeat your purpose. How are you gonna chase after everyone else's needs if you are laid up... :) There is a chemical reaction that happens during stretching and warm ups that helps to protect you too.

Is there any such thing as a program where new mothers go and take there babies for exercise in your area? The hearing women are doing that, and it might be time for a Deaf club version of that. They take there babies and exercise with them. Then they can chat about mom things too. If there is no group like that, maybe you could start one.. They say it is fun, it's free, and it is quality time with your kid. Check into some of your local are programs like the YWCA and see if they are hosting those kinds of things or who is. Then you can get some ideas of how they handle things. You might even meet some moms that you can trust to watch the little one so you can run. Then you could watch theirs so they could get away for whatever they need to do.

It is just an idea. But you really don't want to lose your love for running and all of the emotional and physical benefits that you get from it. Your baby needs a HAPPY and Healthy mom. :) Good luck! And congratualtions on the new baby!!
