Ok
as most know I am divorcing, we've talked and going the un-contested route so we equally share our son ( as I will mainly have him and watch him since mom works )

Now, I have a house with a contractor repairing the basement foundation wall but still lots of work to do ( electrical/plumbing ) installing bathroom/kitchen, drywall throughout and flooring. Which in no means will be done anytime soon.

As I have stated I am on a list for a 2 bedroom apartment that's based on 30% of income for disabled person(s) ...well............
Today I got the call that the apartment is available for me and want me to come in Monday to sign papers, which in turns will lock me into it for 1 year which is my only real concern since I don't want to be locked into anything right now.
The cost will be a bit more than me paying "rent" to my wife to stay here
but everything is included in the rent for the apartment (sewer/gas/electric/*water) *everyone who rents has to pay $20 a month towards the water bill but the rest is covered by the apartment complex through the rent, the extra $20 is to cover anything over a certain amount that the complex gets a break on with the city.
The biggest issue is I have no furniture since we downsized when we got married and I don't want to get into another heated argument with trying to divide stuff which isn't much to even deal with, yet Im trying to finnish my house which will take a few more months yet to be able to pass for occupancy... I don't want to waste money on cheap furniture for the apartment that's not going to work in the house.. Maybe a futon to sleep on / sit on for now?
What would you do?

Get whatever you can comfortably afford.

If you can afford nice furniture that will transfer to the new house, then go ahead.

However, if you can't afford that then don't go into debt for furniture. Just buy basic pieces at Goodwill. I don't recommend used mattresses for sanitary reasons, so an air mattress might be a better choice.

Besides, who says you'll be able to afford better furniture for your new house right away? You might have to live with that cheap furniture for a while after you move. You'll get enough mileage out of it to make it worth while.

In the meantime, some fresh paint and colorful pillows on old furniture can brighten it up and give it new life.

Yes, I don't want to buy new furniture at the apartment , no need to move it time and again... thinking a $100 futon would do... as a couch and bed. I have a kitchen table/chairs already at the house I got from craigslist last year, I wouldn't move stuff to storage, Id just secure and lock it up at the house. last time I ever put anything in storage was when I was selling my first house and buying the second house so the house was empty for buyers to see the rooms better. It was a new storage center and was already infested with roaches... I pretty much got rid of everything from the storage since I wasn't about to fight roaches in my new house... some people are just straight up disgusting and Im really not fond of apartments either, nasty people just coming and going.
Im not materialistic so I don't have to have expensive stuff, but do like well made furniture that lasts.

Its tough, whose name on that house that you said were working on? If it is both you and your going to be ex wife name on it. I would just walk and grab that apartment spot. I know it sucks but never know what divorce judge decides. If you didn't grab it, then both of you and your ex wife might end up get nothing from house and end up owe even more money.

Talk with your attorney NOW about this. Because Federal government has been cutting down subsided apartments and this opportunity may be your last one for a long time. I think effective April 15th, not sure.

i got futon and often sleep on it,comfy....i would thought since you have main care for your son then it no contest with wife furniture yours

I have bought futons for cheap like $30. No need to spend $100 on used futons where I live. In my area, I get a lot of good deals at Goodwill. Maybe you can too. I am sure there are a lot of thrift stores and garage sales going on. No need to pay retail if you don't have to. No need to spend fortunte on a new furniture if you are going to be there for a year and then move again.

My house Im working on is in my name only.
House we live in now is her name only ( she had it well before we met )
Im not like the greedies out there wanting to take someone elses house like my second ex did to me. I will let her keep her house, I hate the place anyways but still I wouldn't take it or make her sell it unless she started crap with mine... lose mine/lose yours.

No I was looking at a new futon, I bought one with my first house... it wasn't too bad, it was the cheap metal one so not real comfortable, I may get the wood one which is a little better or I can build a wooden one and just buy the mattress for it

but you the one giving your child a home so she got see reason

stuff we have wouldn't go with new décor, I cant see moving it , the sets are too large and very heavy for any of the bedrooms at apartment or my house anyways. I can always hit rent to own for a nice bedroom set for my son, I could care less about me just as long as I got a comfortable place to lay my head. I still have a long way to go on the house so its not immediate at the time since I will still watch my son at her house until mine is ready.

With a disabling injury to the back, you should not buy a futon.

A good quality recliner that goes all the way back , so you could both sleep and sit would be healthier.

I agree here as I did have one I bought used for after my surgery and was very comfy, sold it but I do have another in the garage that needs stuffing in the arms, that may be a good idea for the time being.
The one I sold was stationary and solid, this one I still have is a rocker recliner, might rock myself back to sleep trying to get up in the mornings...lol

When I slept in the recliner after surgery My son always laid down with me. Now that Ive been sleeping on the couch my son sleeps on the loveseat next to me.. its cute.

My plan is to get a hughe sectional with recliners built in, maybe 2 since the living room is so large?
