AN ADOPTED baby died at a Johannesburg hospital yesterday morning in what has been described as one of the worst cases of child abuse in the country.

Twenty-one-month-old Tammy Herman from Booysens, near the city centre, died at the Garden City Clinic after suffering brain and liver damage and 12 broken ribs.

Her adoptive parents brought her to the hospital on Wednesday night after she had been vomiting continuously. She had bruises on her body and was said to be "listless* upon arrival.

When the doctor sent her for X-rays, it was discovered that she had terrible internal injuries.

She was then rushed to the intensive care unit of the hospital, said Johannesburg police spokesperson Constable Sefako Xaba.

Xaba said the Child Protection Unit was investigating the case, which he described as "very serious*.

He said the matter had first been reported to the police on Thursday.

Director of the Johannesburg Child Welfare Society Lyn Perry said Tammy had been adopted by the family when she was four months old. The society handled the adoption.

Perry said the social worker involved in the adoption was in contact with hospital authorities - who first alerted the police - and was "working closely* with the police. - DDC

 Oh Sheesh! That story breaks my heart :( That baby is only 21 months. People just pissed me off when they abuse kids and babies. They need to be knocked out themselves.

Oh gosh, bad luck for adoptive parents and waste their emotionally. I feel bad for that baby. Urghh.

No, I have better idea for these creeps
18 solid years of HARD LABOR 14 hours a day, total of 2 hours of breaks (like 30 min lunch, 10 min break once a while) 7 full days, no single day off!
Sorry no sick day/personal day allocated.8 hours is for showering, and sleeping that is IT!

DAMN, I hate hear these stories!!!! I know it is HARD to discipline kids, BUT they don't deserve unreasonable disciplines.

I don't know how the adoption system works but should a social worker double-check the parent's background before giving the baby up for adoption? :ugh:

I wonder what's going to happen now?... :dunno:

This is terrible and we are talking about South Africa which makes me curious about what the law says in this case?

Several factors!
Too many baby were born, and not enough qualified couples willing to adopt. Unfortunately most parents prefer adopt just newborn babies than kids! Secondly, not enough money to fund Social Worker, not enough money to fund shelters, they have been cutting significant after the day when people complain about welfare queens and wanted them to cut. So, that have significant effect on the Social services lately. Problems is getting bigger and bigger every year! That is why I have been telling that US government is primed to get collapse anytime.

Sad? Yup!

Unfortunately, there are issues like this all around...including here in the US. I have some experience with the adoption system and it really needs to redone completely. There are people out there that adopt for various reasons, even for profit....unfortunately, its not just for people who want to give kids a good, stable home. There is no way to tell the reasons somebody is adopting. Is it love or is it for profit? The social workers are overburdened many times and don't always pick up on some things. If they visit a house and everything seems fine, they go on their way...even though it could all be an act.

Yeah I can understand that Taylor, Thank you... :aw:

I feel terrible for what happened to that baby and any other kids who suffer and/or die from abuse. I wish I coud make all these kids safe from abusive people.

Child abuse is the lowest form of crime. People who commit such atrocities should be strapped to a rocket and launched into the sun.
