Remember a while back when someone mentioned an article about owners abandoning horses due to cost of feed?

Well, it's now happening to household pets such as cats and dogs.

Since the cost of living is on the rise, they are unable to maintain care for their pets. They abandon their pets instead. :(

Now cash-strapped families abandon their pets - because they can't afford to care for them

Home-owners are abandoning their pets as they struggle to cope with the rising cost of living.

Animal rescue centres have found themselves inundated with dogs, cats and rabbits from those who can no longer afford to care for them.

The RSPCA's largest rescue centre, the Stubbington Ark in Fareham, Hampshire, is nearing capacity at 570 animals.

Pets are being abandoned as homeowners struggle with the cost of living

Vanessa Eden, a worker at the centre, said: "We have had people bringing in their pets because they can no longer afford to pay their energy bills, let alone vet bills or pet food."

Older animals and those with long-term medical problems are the most likely to be dumped because they need expensive treatments.

Freshfields Animal Rescue in Liverpool has seen a steady rise in dumped pets in the past six months.

Trustee Marge Albert said: "There has been an increase in the number of people handing in their pets because they can no longer afford them.

"When times get hard people look at their finances to see where they can make cutbacks and the family pet is often an easy target.

"The problem is likely to get worse over the summer as people jet off on holiday and realise it is going to cost them a couple of hundred pounds to put their pets in kennels."

yep that is SO SAD

i am not one of them i would NEVER abandoned my dog i always manage to get foods and etc... i save money only for my dog whenever he needs i don't need anything for me only foods that all.
but i too saved for other things as well anyway when i don't need right now.

Wow... That's very stupid...

I wouldn't dare to abandoned my own pets since it feels like I do abandoned my own babies.. Forget it...

Wow, that's very sad. I wouldn't abandoned my own animals. (if i get any pets in future).

Oh dear. Only if they could manage their financial better then they can keep the pets.

They shouldn't have done this because their kids & pets will be affected by this decision.

Their pets won't understand why they were abandoned.

Sadly many of those animals will have to be euthanised because who would want to adopt them if they're struggling themselves.

:(

We, our family, found abandon cat after hurricane Ivan. He was so skinny cat. Now he is fat.

It's very sad---people who are losing homes will be leaving pets in shelters and by the road. There will be more of that in the months to come. Even in my vet's office today, a booklet of pets being put up for adoption due to "a family emergency". I'd take one but this one is best friends with another dog so the owner wants to keep them together.... Last week, I was asked if I wanted to take in a beagle. Sure, if the dog's in danger. The owner wanted $175. for the beagle but giving the other dog away. Yea, right.

I have been saving my stimulus $$ to get a dental filling re-filled---only to maybe have to pay that towards the veterinary "bill" I put on my AMEX this morning. BUT I feel better knowing they are fully vaccinated and protected against parvovirus two houses away. One of them was two months overdue for this year's shots anyway but too chancey with that parvo so close by. So bite the wallet!:ugh3:

It's easy to say that you would never abandon the pets and I'm sure they said it too. But when worst comes to worst as it comes down to either you & kids or the dog on who gets to eat.... I think we both know who has to go away. But yes it's indeed a tragedy. The shelter I volunteered at has influx of dogs at certain season. sad....

<hug my dog>

Luckily, NOT MY PETS! I've had hard times before and I still managed to feed them. If that means its a plain tuna sandwich for dinner to get them chow, that's the sacrifice I make and proud of it. I think the majority of cases out there is ignorance and neglect, It's hard to believe a country like the US is succumbing to such measures.

I agree with you on that also, I just mentioned a mid-level crisis. It's obvious what would happen in a worst case scenario.

male Yorkie.. i think he's 5-6 years old.

I heard a slight different reason for abandoning pets is because of foreclosures. They had to move to apartments or in with relatives where pets aren't allowed/wanted.
