Now this will just make phone use less reliable, looks like if you want a reply, it will be mandatory for some to leave a message?

New phone scam catching people off guard

Feb. 5, 2014: A new phone scam is sweeping the country, and in most cases, your cell phone rings only once. Amy Davis reports.
HOUSTON -
A new phone scam is sweeping the country.
Part of what makes it dangerous: Crooks don't even need your credit card information to steal your money. All they need is for you to return their phone call.
Food writer Jenny Vergara was hard at work around lunchtime recently when her cell phone rang once.
"I looked down at the screen and I realized it was this weird Antigua call and I thought, don't know anybody in Antigua," said Vergara.
She didn't know it then, but Vergara had just become the target of an international phone scam.
Scammers overseas buy or steal lists of U.S. cell phone numbers and use computers to mass dial them.
Your cell phone rings just long enough to generate a missed call.
When you call back, the spammers charge your bill like a 900 number. They charge $20 for the call and another $9 for every minute you spend on the line.
"It is a new take on an old scam, so we are familiar with this type of thing, but the one-ring scam is brand new," said BBB spokesman Aaron Reese.
The Better Business Bureau says this scam is more effective than some others -- in part because it raises no red flags.
"There is no one trying to sell you anything. There is no one sending the wrong type of message or who has a foreign accent or doesn't speak very well. All of those things that we look for are absent," said Reese.
Even the number looks normal, aside from where it came from. For many smartphone owners, the unfamiliar location was the only warning they needed not to return the call.
"So it said, 'Antigua' and I thought, yeah, no. I'd like to go visit there, but I don't know anybody there," said Vergara.
Experts say scams like this normally target one region or city at a time.
The BBB says part of what makes this one different is that it's happening all across the country and all at once.

Glad I don't call numbers back that I don't know! Leave me a message and let me know who you are... if you don't leave a message, text me or I miss a call I don't recognize... have a good time by yourself because I'm not wasting my time! :P

I've heard of that but never happened to me but I keep getting calls from Charlotte and no idea who it is.

Was on the news about this scam...has hit my City too...today I received a call from (904) which is Florida (Jacksonville)...but they hung up before I could get to the phone....when I called back (via relay)...that number has been disconnected....:hmm:...I told Relay..."impossible...whoever it was had just called me..."...tried a 2nd time and got a recording....very strange.

I don't reply to the text number I don't recognize nor call back to that number.

We (at work) have been hearing about that. I do get some calls that I don't recognize and I usually don't call back on my cell phone. I always call back on VP. At one point that I call back on VP and relay said they don't accept toll call (since they have a system that detect to be sure it's not a toll call). So, I knew that maybe a scam call.

I do the exact same thing-- do not answer on my cell, and call back on VP. And block the number using the link above.

When I get a call that show up as unknown # and person on my ID or has number I do not recognize I will just pick up my phone to stop it from ringing. I only have a line phone and cordless phone can this happen to me too??

we deaf are lucky where we can just call back on VP and no charge against us. If terp tells us if it a pay toll call- I just smile and thank them for their time. lucky me/us!!!

Reminds me of the missed calls I got from a weird phone number. It's 25363827. It started last week. The calls came while I was out at work. Could this be connected to this one-ring scam?

Well, connected or not, I'll never answer this caller at all. I found this thread at 25363827 - Unknown - page 3/11 where several complaints were lodged against the caller. Apparently, it's a scammer asking for credit card numbers.

One of my free texting apps with a real number has gotten multiple calls from this one number: (717) 628-7009, and using the trusty www.800notes.com website, I was able to confirm it was a scam number. However, that same number also got an international call-- from this number: (268) 762-0152. The third number I got, also a scam number, is (201) 283-9762. I have since disabled that app.

I saw that article a while ago as it is most certainly an informative article. Luckily for us, deaf people, we don't have to answer the phone since we cannot hear. Thereby, we avoid being charged fees!

Which is why I picked it. It had plenty of good information in it.
