A film about a deaf person

I guess you stopped reading halfway through my post? It's for precisely this reason that we need accurate portrayals of CIs and ALL issues related to deafness in films that will reach a hearing audience. By censoring CIs in a film just simply because it is a CI, you are missing a great opportunity to educate. And when you do that, you leave open the door for such wonderfully enlightening films on CIs like Sound and Fury. That was a great one, wasn't it?

If CI's are so good, why don't you have one?

I read your post fully, and it doesn't make sense to me. We need to show the hearing audience that we're able. So these without CI's can get jobs..

It all depends on the filmmaker's depiction of the CI. Couldn't the CI character easily have a difficult time understanding voices? Wouldn't such a depiction give the audience a different perspective than the one you suggest?

Filmmaker needs budget to make a movie. Proposing this kind of movie to CI company... no chance lol. Then who else? Gally? Sorenson?

l.o.l.

but if one can funds it himself.... all power to him!

I'm a filmmaker and I'm currently writing a script in which the protagonist is deaf. I'm not deaf, and I have been reading these forums in order to educate myself about the reality of being deaf.

I'm very keen to ensure that the film I'm writing is not simply a hearing person's ignorant idea of "what it's like to be deaf" and is actually informed by the authentic experiences of real people who live with deafness.

I would be very interested to hear from you regarding your objections to how deaf people are typically represented in film and television - the inaccuracies, the cliches, the prejudices - and also some positive suggestions about what an insightful portrayal of the deaf experience might include.

Thank you for any feedback you can offer.

Well, I'm probably the only AD'er who wants captions with his signs (PBS' Deaf in America; I got like 80% of that without captions)...heyyyy I'm learning.

"The reality of being deaf"? :hmm. I haven't seen many movies where deafness is portrayed- I've never found a fictional character who is hard-of-hearing or with single-sided deafness....you're not going to find a very receptive audience when the protagonist is saying "what?" a few dozen times.

Technology can be a *itch so, be careful about that being a "focal" point in the movie. There was some show on MTV a while back and I'm sure it was about a dude getting a CI because I had co-workers the next day asking me if I ever would consider getting one. "no...what are they? a coc-what?...a coc-ring? jeez. man.. that's gross"

It's too bad either of you can't engage in rational debate without resorting to manipulative word twisting. Any logical thinking person can read my posts on this thread and see the points I was trying to make and see that you two are just a couple little trolls.

You're both back on ignore. Don't even bother responding.

Not word twisting here.. again.

I was trying to discuss my POV...

Oh, I am. But your posts on here are getting ridiculous and then you start to defend yourself vigorously. Why not have a mature debate instead of putting each other down?

Where was I defending myself? You're seeing things, just saying.

The screenplay:

Man. Born deaf in one ear and mostly deaf the either ear. Early teens, on the fence of getting CI as his hearing isn't as "great" as he wants it to be. A few days before CI surgery, his gf threatens to leave if he receives it and then kabam after successful "adaption" to career family/kids...gets hit and killed by a train. The End.

Sprinkle other social awkwardness/jokes/feel good stuff in between and that should be fairly decent.

That is what has happened to me several times. Hence the fact I am not too keen of having the concept of CI's being shown on TV.

so you're saying Botts, deafbajal, shel, and I are putting others down since our POVs are same as PFH?

Maybe I am seeing things, maybe not.

But I know who you are. I probably know you well compared to other ADers because of the conversations we've had and I'm telling you to just let the debate be more fluid, mature like adults because every time Alex posts, you start to nitpick at every detail, every word, and it's starting to get tiring.

Are you saying I was immature?

Where was I immature in this:

Where did I twist words? Where did I defend myself?

I present you these questions because I know I did not do the above.

:cool2:

Also Alex brought up the stereotype question, and I answered with my thoughts of what the poster meant. The discussion went from there.
