TAKAMATSU -- Two deaf and mute people who intimidated another disabled woman using sign language, forcing her to pay them 3 million yen, have been arrested, Kagawa Prefectural Police said.

Arrested were Harumi Otani, 59, and Hirofumi Takaya, 65. Takaya's 40-year-old daughter Masami was also arrested in connection with the crime, police said.

Both Otani and Takaya were deaf and mute. The three suspects reportedly learned about the 77-yer-old victim at a gateball contest for deaf and mute people in Kochi Prefecture in January last year.

Investigators said the three conspired to intimidate the elderly woman, who was also deaf and mute, and on Aug. 29 last year they demanded money from her at her home in Sanuki, Kagawa Prefecture. They reportedly knocked her to the ground and trampled on her legs, then took her to an agricultural cooperative in the city and made her withdraw a total of 3 million yen from two accounts and hand them the money.

Police said the three suspects had learned about other deaf and mute people at the gateball contest. Law enforces are continuing to question them on suspicion of further crimes. (Mainichi)

It is bad enough when hearing people do bad things to us, but even worse when amongst our own does bad things to us. Glad they were caught and hope the old Deaf lady is doing good. God Bless Her. :)

Heath I want to know what "hearing people" have done to you? Why does it seem that you blanket us by saying that we as a group do bad things? I mean, I am hearing and have never done anything mean or bad to any person Deaf or hearing.....So I feel like your grouping me as a bad hearing person....hmmmm
