Cochlear Implants Redefine What It Means To Be Deaf

I read this article yesterday too and I had the same reaction. I found it audist and I thought it was sending the message that deaf people can't possibly lead a fulfilling life without CI.

Wando teacher fired for showing 'Jackass 2' plans to appeal

When he discovered how inappropriate it was becoming he turned it off? Um, you don't watch your materials before showing them to your class? Besides screening them for inappropriate content, don't you need to make some sort of annotation so that you are prepared to give your class an activity or...

    Two HoH/Deaf people having children

Anyone who believes that children shouldn't be brought into the world because they might be deaf is just plain audist. What is so wrong with being deaf or hoh? Deaf and hoh people live perfectly normal, happy lives, as you have experienced yourself. Educate people to get rid of their ignorance...

Signing with Left and right hand

I've always been taught that you always sign with your dominant hand. If the sign requires two hands and one hand moves, the hand that you should move is your dominant hand.

No problem. I knew this was a debatable topic, but I didn't realize that discussions would potentially be quite so heated. Thanks for the heads up.

    Best approach to deaf education

What do you feel is the best approach to deaf education? Voice off deaf school? Oral deaf school, mainstream, a combination or something else I haven't mentioned? I'm currently student teaching in Adolescent Engilsh Edcation. I'm thinking of going into Deaf Education, however. From what...

A School's Stupidity about the IDEA

    1. Parents have the right to request evaluation 2. Deafness/Hearing Impairment is one of the 13 categories covered under IDEA and, therefore, your child should have an IEP, not a 504 if her hearing loss affects her educational performance.

    Hearing people's view of CI

It's great that your daughter has CIs and is also fluent in ASL. Some of the misinformation that hearing people have is because of the way that early intervention is conducted. Medical professionals meet with parents to discuss "communication options", making it sound like the child either has...

There should be a captioning law on Netflix and other live streaming sites.

I totally agree! It's ridiculous that, in this day and age, Netflix cannot provide CC on all their movies and TV shows. They are providing them much more widely now because they have been sued (maybe even multiple times) by deaf organizations. My cousin, who is deaf, pointed out on the Netflix...

    Hearing people's view of CI

Caroline is exactly right. I'm not saying that all hearing parents who choose CI for their children are misinformed. However, I'm saying that too many are, and it's a problem.

How can hearies included the Deaf?

When I am around deaf people, I sign to the best of my ability (even when talking to other hearing people around) and I also look at the deaf person to help them understand anything I cannot sign. Also, I ALWAYS repeat if asked until they understand. If they can't understand and I don't know the...

    If you had a choice...

I'm sorry, I wasn't trying to be insensitive, my goal is to engage with the deaf community while being open minded and respectful, so I do apologize.

    If you had a choice...

If you could choose to be born hearing or to have never lost your hearing (depending on when you became deaf), would you do it, or would you remain deaf? I've heard many deaf people say that they would remain deaf because it's such a huge part of their identity and how they view the world.
