    What's your favorite sign?

For those of you who said their favourite sign is the sign for Bullsh!t, could you tell us how you sign it? I know 3 or 4 different ways of signing it! Berry - said May I ask, how do you sign it? Again, I know several ways of signing "popcorn". The sign I use most often - Left hand I...

    What's your favorite sign?

I guess this is a question more for the hearies learning ASL than for those who have known ASL all their lives. Here's a few signs I've always liked. Don't know why, they are very common. "Oh I see." - looks like the "yes" sign but with Y-hand formation. "none left" or maybe "its all...

Old ASL signs vs New signs

For the sign "danger", I would use the one from ASLpro, the other sign from the other website sort of looks like "refuse". As for the sign for "bus", the old sign here is fingerspelled "B U S" - the new sign is both hands in B handshape and one in front of the other, then pull the hands...

    Hiding the hearing loss....

There is no reason to hide one's hearing loss. Yeah, sometimes some hearing people can be real jerks and and act like total @sshats. And when they do, everyone else sees them for what they are. I believe most hearing people in today's age are very sensitive to people with hearing loss...

    ??s for late deafened adults

Also, I think some late-deafened are sort of in denial about their hearing loss.

    ??s for late deafened adults

I would suggest to any late-deafened adult to contact his church to see if his Church has any sort of Deaf ministry which could assist him in searching for ASL resources. Or if one's Church doesn't have a Deaf Ministry, contact a church which does have one. I've heard of several local churches...

    ??s for late deafened adults

A couple questions for those who became deaf or profoundly HoH.... Did you learn ASL? If so, was it difficult to learn, to find a class, or to find someone to help you learn. If not, is there a reason you don't want to learn or having trouble learning? Do you find acceptance within the...

Old ASL signs vs New signs

This is how we sign traffic jam or the use of classifers showing several cars which are parked alongside the street. If you wanted to show a parking lot filled with cars, the hands were placed next to each other and then pulled apart.

    ASL student attending Deaf event

I think the most important thing the ASL student should remember is that he is a guest at the deaf event; therefore, should behave as a guest.

Old ASL signs vs New signs

In some areas, the sign for "grass" or "hay" is also used for "truck". In this area, the 3-handshape was never a sign for car, it was a classifier. (I've re-checked with some elderly deaf who confirmed this.) Just remembered another old sign for truck! It's like the old sign for car of...

Old ASL signs vs New signs

They certainly weren't here! car - miming using a steer wheel truck - regional sign - looks like the sign for country but with Y handshape van - had to be fingerspelled. The use of the three fingers moving along wasn't considered a sign, but a classifier. This I remember when a hearie...

Old ASL signs vs New signs

Who uses the term "ice box"? Lots of people. A very common term one hears almost daily! Also, "ice box" is used for the freezer, not the frig. But what about those new signs which simply do not visually represent the item which is being signed. For example, the "new" sign for car - using...

Old ASL signs vs New signs

For one thing, it seems a lot of ppl have gotten off-topic and/or misunderstand the intent of this thread. For some reason, some people started talking about syntax and grammar - which is totally off-topic for this thread. It's a discussion about new signs vs old signs. Not a regional...

    New Signers' Funny Mistakes

Interesting. Here, "to meet" is done with either the "D" handshape or the "1" handshape - doesn't make any difference. The sign "to date" is simply the sign "to meet", but done repeatedly.

    New Signers' Funny Mistakes

A few funny stories. Someone I worked with wanted to learn how to sign "nice to meet you". I had him practice it a few times. Then when a deafie walked by, he waved to her and signed "nice to f--k you." Deafie simply waves back, nods, and shot me a look. Deafie and hearie were at the...

Old ASL signs vs New signs

I know this is an old thread which I started..... Let me give an couple of example of old ASL signs vs new ASL signs. At the local deaf club, a young deaf man went to the concession stand and signed to the deaf woman that he wanted to buy some potato chips. The deaf woman thought the...
