Mom of deaf son seeking help from the deaf community

Continuing my earlier post.... I would encourage the OP to also visit the local school with her son. Visit the classrooms and ask as many questions as possible. Find out exactly how they teach the Deaf students. Ask them how many hours they will spend with hearing students and how many...

Mom of deaf son seeking help from the deaf community

First of all, I would like to commend the OP for being pro-active in her son's education. I would recommend the OP investigate both the residential school and the local school's Deaf education program. Just because the local school has a formal Deaf education program doesn't neccessarily...

Are you guys sick of the USA?

Talk to any expat living in German or check out the forums for English speaking people living in Germany. I don't know the forum rules for posting other forums, so I have refrained from posting the name of the one I visit often.

Are you guys sick of the USA?

For those wondering, I am American but have always been fond of the word "daft". One reason, I was speaking to someone and he told me je had learned a "new" Brit word - daft. I thought it was pretty funny because I thought it was fairly common knowledge. Talked to a few people and they didn't...

Are you guys sick of the USA?

Speak to any Brit and they will tell you from personal experience. One of my best friends from a few years ago (she moved out of state and I have lost contact with her) told me the NHS was a huge joke and was in dire need of fixing. Her mum need an operation for her hip and was told she had to...

Are you guys sick of the USA?

If you are going to leave the US, are you really prepared for whichever country you wish to reside in? Are you aware there are a lot of problems with the UK's NHS? You may need surgery and then be told you will need to wait 2 years for the operation. You could pay for it out of your own...

    Interpreter blunders

At one time, there was a interpreter here for a church who was taught sign from associating with deaf people. Not sure if she ever took any classes at a college; I do know she was not certified. But she was fairly good, but did do a few mistakes. Once during the sermon, she was to interpret...

Old ASL signs vs New signs

The only people around here who use the C-handshape people are the ones using SEE. The ASLers understand it, but think its too "SEE" and the old sign is more visually descriptive.

Old ASL signs vs New signs

The two handed C-handshape for car is the new sign - its from SEE. If you are in an ASL class, I don't think your instructor would be using it. Most deafies I know, know that sign but never use it. They use the old sign which looks like the steering wheel. The sign for van is fingerspelled...

What is it like to be hearing?

One thing hearies can sometimes do - they can tell where someone is from simply from his accent. One can usually pick out a born and raised New Yorker, Bostonian, Southern, etc. When I could hear well, I had to really concentrate to understand some of the Brits. The Brits here can better...

I have problem at job. Any deafies here cashier?

Contact your state's Deaf Services division or perhaps Attorney General. What your boss is doing is illegal. Also, contact Target's corporation office and tell them exactly what your boss said to you. The excuse of not being able to communicate with customers is utter BS. I work in a store...

Ever have an interpreter you couldn't understand?

First of all, I must say that the vast majority of interpreters I have ever met have been very skilled. So I hope you interpreters are not upset with this thread! Have you ever had an interpreter you simply couldn't understand? If so, what did you do??? Many years ago, one church I...

    Excuse me.... Shopping

Legally Deaf - having so much hearing loss that one needs an interpreter for meetings, classes, etc. I consider myself HoH because I can hear voice when a person speaks loudly (but that doesn't mean I can fully understand the person because I do miss some of the words). But I can't follow a...

Old ASL signs vs New signs

That's the sign for "pop" or "soda". That sign includes Pepsi, 7-up, Coke, Dr Pepper, Mt Dew, Fanta, etc. The signs for brands of pop we use: Coke - like an injection into the arm; however, many ppl prefer it fingerspelled Pepsi - same sign as Italy Dr Pepper - Sign doctor and then...

    Excuse me.... Shopping

If a sales clerk or a cashier is rude to you, I strongly suggest you complain to the store manager. You could also suggest to the manager that the person get training on how to serve customers with disabilities. Here's a funny story for you. This happened when I had more hearing than I...

Annoying habit when showing someone a language

If someone only wants to learn the dirty words or crude phrases, teach them something entirely different and tell them its the dirty words. For example, if someone wants to know how to sign "I'm horny" - teach them "I'm stupid" and say it means "I'm horny". Am I bad or what?

    What's your favorite sign?

It still cracks me up when I see hearies do that! BTW, Bottesini - I see we live in the same state. Wonder if we are in the same city....

Old ASL signs vs New signs

Cope, No worries. Something I have heard several deaf people say, "No sign is wrong. The sign might be used wrong or not used in the area." You may learn a sign that is perfectly valid and use it with another person who has never seen the sign before. If you are conversing with a deaf...
