Berry, Distance is not an issue. Sadly, I only get to see him once a year now. And you are right about the MR diagnosis. I have also worked with children on the Autistic spectrum and if you can break through the barriers that Autism puts up, you usually find an extremely intelligent person.

    Sick of this

Berry, Maybe that is why I find it somewhat easier than others in the hearing world to understand the issues of the Deaf Community. First of all I have a 45 year old cousin who was diagnosed mentally retarded. After all of these years, I really wonder if he is mentally retarded. I think the...

    Sick of this

Bebonang, Thank you, but I won't claim to understand all of the issues the Deaf Community faces or have faced, but I am trying. I am still in the phase of not being able to believe that some of these inequalities happened. Not that I don't believe they happened, but more because I sometimes...

    Sick of this

I am a newbie to AD, am hearing, and in my second semester of ASL. While not proud of it, my reasoning for taking ASL over another language choice is because I am a non-traditional student and thought ASL would be the easiest to learn. Was I ever mistaken, not only is ASL in noway as easy as I...

Am adding you and your family to my list of those in need of prayers. So sorry for this terrible tragedy.

    My ASL Report

Byrdie, I was thinking of adding it, but was trying to limit the amount of information I was throwing at my classmates. However, I agree that it is an important part of Deaf History. I will reevaluate my information, though, and plug it in. Thanks for the input.

    My ASL Report

Thank you Deafteen90 and neither did I. His father actually taught in a deaf school and AGB knew sign language. However, his wife was from an affluent family who frowned upon its use. If he lapsed into using sign, his wife would remind him not to. I wonder if his philosophies regarding the...

Jillio, I just posted my report as a new thread under general chat titled My ASL Report. I am a little nervous about how it will be received, but it is there and I'll take whatever feedback I get into consideration. Thanks!

    My ASL Report

I have a report to do for my ASL class. I am going to try to attach the slides as jpegs even though it is a PowerPoint. These are just a few notes to go with the slides. Slide 2 addresses the fact that in years past it wasn't uncommon for the Deaf to be institutionalized. Slide 3 are...

Jillio, Thank you for the kind words. I do try to be open-minded. I feel bad that while not close-minded, that I am just now being educated about the Deaf World. I have to present a report for my class that I have entitled, "You've Come a Long Way Baby." I would love to share it with some of...

I went to the Valentine's Day Party for the local Deaf Club by myself last night. I really debated going, because I wasn't sure if anyone else from my class was going. I am really glad that I went, I feel it helped me to better understand, at least a little bit, what being deaf must be like. I...

As I said, you have to be aware of the time-frame and the bigotry that went with them. The cast decided to wear hats to signify black and white, rather than make-up. I thought it a pretty neat idea.

We saw Finian's Rainbow, which was based in the 1940's. Some political incorrectness by today's standards, but the cast apologized ahead of time. I was really excited when I realized that the actress playing the role of Susan, a young woman who is hearing, but non-verbal, actually knew ASL. I...

Hear Again, Good for you! I'm glad to hear that your cleaning spree lifted your spirits. Matter of fact, you've motivated me to get my butt in gear! I don't have a positive for today, but I did take my niece who is married with a young child and a tight budget to a musical last night. I...

    Excited

I went to the musical "Finian's Rainbow" last night. I wasn't really familiar with the story line before going. One of the characters was hearing, but non-verbal and used sign-language. I was really impressed that the actress playing the role actually knew ASL and used it during the performance...

    ASL Student

Shadow, Not being deaf myself, I am sure I am less aware of the discriminations than those who are. I also have to admit that the people in my ASL class are more aware and open-minded in regards to the deaf community and culture than probably the average hearing person.

I have also learned about the oral method, but not to the extent that I am currently with the report I am researching for. Now when people comment about why deaf people feel they need their own culture, I think I have a much better understanding. I never realized before the persecution that deaf...

    curious

NotSoDeaf, After rereading my post, I understand what you mean about being contradictory. That wasn't my intention, so I do apologize. I have seen this teacher teach and there are times that it seems that the students are frequently unsure of his directions. My curiosity was more about...
