Super Nanny has picked a deaf couple

I was appalled at the hearing children not wanting to learn ASL unless it's "fun." Boundaries need to be established. When your parents are around, you SIGN. If you don't, you go on the infamous naughty step. It's just rude and disrespectful and I was very embarrassed for the kids. However, I...

    Gally Hillel Members...Question

Ooh, and I will attend probably Fall 2010. Yeah, it doesn't have to be an actual shul but with shul you have a good chance for minyan (group of 10 Jewish men) so you can say important prayers like the full Shema, Amidah, etc.. I know many Jews who go to some place and form a minyan there. No...

    Gally Hillel Members...Question

Hi! Shana Tov/Happy New Year, all! Yes, it is 5769 now. And Orthodox Jews don't drive on Shabbos due to the prohibition of kindling or extinguishing a fire...a car operates by both on Shabbos and holidays. While I'm not fully shomer Shabbos (I'm male - female is shomera and plural is...

    Accelerated Reader

Teachers and, more importantly, PARENTS should teach reading comprehension. But, my big problem is forcing it as a grade. I hate that...why can't I just read? I already have papers, etc. to prove I read and understood the story and class discussion. AR is overkill.

    Accelerated Reader

Hi Babyblue, the idea is to make it mandatory, and encourage them by rewarding points. Unfortunately, many schools take AR points for graded quiz, which is where the faults begin. They aren't hard once you learn to memorise the little parts of the book but that's really not a skill needed for...

Titles: Mr. Mrs. and Miss..how to sign?

In my school it is firstname-lastname but I just use their sign name. If I talk I will usually say their first name or last name. If they REALLY want it, I will put for the effort required for Mr/Mrs...why don't hearies realise it is HARD for us to say them (specially Mrs for me)?

    Hai!

WELCOME to AllDeaf!!! That is great you are into coding, I am too. Not many people do much coding outside of CSS because things like WordPress take care of the HTML for them. Though I can do it, my CMS just makes it easier. If you learn CSS, you're good to go. HTML is just the content, not the...

    Gally Hillel Members...Question

Are there any Modern Orthodox shuls near Gally (i.e., within walking distance)? Are there any Jews at Gally that keep Shabbos (shomrei Shabbos)?

    BiBi success stories.

What about those of us who transferred to a SD with 3 years of ASL and are not yet fluent? Ahem...though I definitely I am proponent of BiBi...my first language is English. I think more in ASL, but sign PSE because I am not TOTALLY used to all-ASL...though I do like it. :)

why some students still stay at Gallaudet over 7 years?

I actually want to get my AAS next year in a year. For Gally, I expect to be there for 8 years getting my Master's certification for Deaf Ed. :)

    Accelerated Reader

Personally, I am vehemently against it in all education, but especially Deaf ed, where many students read English as a second language. My other gripes about it include: lack of higher level thinking questions (analysis? Socratic method?), the fact that it does not ask questions connected to...

Explaining the Birds and the Bees to your Deaf child; Any advice?

Kudos to you for asking... Whatever you do, don't let the dorm kids do it. They will pervert everything and use curse words (heh). I wouldn't be surprised if he's dorm if he already knows the signs for them. You should go with Jillio's and deafbajagal's suggestions. Good luck!

    Ubuntu Linux vs Windows Vista

Linux FTW I am typing this on one of those pre-installed Ubuntu Dell laptops. It is sleeeeeeeeek. I love Terminal, how easy it is to customise and hack, and of course, it's free. Vista would KILL my machine, and my Desktop is pretty fast (Ubuntu, convert from XP). What I've seen of Debian...

Why do they make Deaf students spend their first three years at college taking no ..

Learning at least another language should be mandatory for all students regardless of hearing status. I don't care about suck-up politics, there are more languages than just English for Heaven's sake! In Europe most citizens are bi- if not multi-lingual. This should be encouraged; Europe is...

    Question about be deaf teacher

If I taught hearing kids, it would have to be a small class size (10-15 kids). I think I'd be OK using voice-off- or speech only, but if there are many kids, I would ask for an interpreter and just voice for myself.

    Favorite Subject?

This is hard I would say my favourites are English, Reading, and Global Languages. I can get into anything, though, the teacher just has to be engaging and interactional as opposed to the "stand-and-lecture" types. GLang usually has the most interaction. I will take GLang over math any day...I...

Feelings on how a Deaf child should be taught

As a Deaf student transferring OUT of mainstream school to a school for the Deaf, I feel bi-bi is the best method. Next year I am going to Ohio School for the Deaf (I love ISD more, but there were custodial issues. Le sigh). My home is a strictly oral one. Most days I prefer voice off ASL but...

Hearing guys and "Children of a Lesser God"

Yeah, I watched the movie before I finished ASL III and I didn't like the hearing guy at all. Sarah, to me, really wanted an emotional connection; he just wanted to soothe his Mr. Fix-It wants. Are speech teachers really that way in a traditional SD, though? I know it's a movie but I'm just...

Transferring to Ohio School for the Deaf?? Questions re: TRUE philosophy

Hi Jill, Yah, I have noticed that SRS kids *can* sign ASL...it's just a matter of who supervises them. i.e., if it is a Deaf adult, or CODA, or someone fluent in ASL and is OK with it...they sign ASL. But if they are with a primarily English person, they sign English. They're quite flexible and...
