Deaf Man Stabbed After Sign Language Mistaken for Gang Signs

Very sad story! Just shows how ignorant and intolerant some are to the DF and HOH.

Are there any clerical jobs without answering phone?

Owlnessa, I wear 2 hearing aids also. I have to take off a hearing aid to use a standard telephone. Years ago,I worked as a real estate agent. One of the ladies in the office was 80ish and quite deaf. She had an amplified handset with a volume control that could be clicked and...

    Getting new earmolds! Color suggestions??

I saw my audi Monday to get fitted for new aids. They'll be either full shell or half-shell. (all in ear) When much younger (teenager) I wore BTEs. It was very frustrating to me,as a brown-complected person (have W African,European, and Native American ancestry) that back then (late 60's),the...

    any new HDTV with CC

PowerOn, I bought a Sony Google TV 24in back in 2011. The closed captioning on said tv,when in over the air mode (OTA),is fully customizable re: colors, sizes, and fonts. One can even get captions in cursive writing, too. It also has internet capability as well.

She Might Be Deaf-Good Books on ASL?

Spoke with the lady today. Had a pleasant conversation. I probably misread the body language, she not being US-born. She's not deaf or HOH. Things look pretty good so far.

She Might Be Deaf-Good Books on ASL?

I'm HOH,single, and recently met a very attractive, reclusive, but very religious woman at my church. I'm 90% certain she may be deaf. I've already downloaded the ASL alphabet. I'd like member recommendations on the best self-help books for learning ASL. I'm willing to patiently use...

Any One Here Suffer From A Mental Disorder?

Re #6: Deaf Badger, you asked if there's any connection between bipolar and schizophrenia. Actually, there can be a blend of both disorders. When schizophrenic symptoms and symptoms of mania and/or depression both exist,it's called schizoaffective disorder. Myself,I have a schizophrenic...

    CapTel in the office?

Laungel, I've been a CapTel user since September,2011. It's been a good investment for me. I have the CapTel 800,which requires that inbound callers dial an 800 number in order for me to see the captions. * Calls that I make from the CapTel caption by default as long as I have...

    Business Cards?

I'm a CapTel user and print out the customizable "call me" cards from their website. I print them out on standard business card paper,10 per page. The paper is perforated and I can tear off as needed. I usually keep 10 in my wallet. It does get across the point that I'm hard-of-hearing. My...

    Yesterday was Lefty Day!

Kinda:roll: I'd heard that among Mensans (members of a high IQ society;upper 2% of population) ,there's a higher % of left-handers among them compared to the general population. Myself,I'm left-handed,was a spelling champion at my junior high school (1969) and am a chess fanatic. I'm not...

    Yesterday was Lefty Day!

I'm a lefty also. Maybe one day I'll get more into sign. As a teenager,I had a book by William Thompkins on Native American Sign Language I'd like to eventually learn both NASL and ASL but right now,I'm studying Spanish (Latin American dialect) with Rosetta Stone and attend a weekly...

    Meat eater VS vegetarian/vegan

This morning I googled up some pages on Bill Pearl,81 years old. Mr. Pearl is a former bodybuilder and 4 time Mr. Universe winner. He's an ovo-lacto vegetarian, which means he does eat eggs and milk products. I remember reading of a study showing that vegetarian middle-age women had...

    Morgan Freeman

I think that what Morgan Freeman is pointing out is that Pres. Obama's black ancestors didn't arrive in the US during the slave era (pre-1865, therefore,he's not quite "one of us". This is some of AAs dirty laundry that we usually don't talk about: why are the children of African and West...

Which one that has best customizing close caption feature?

Google TVs have very customizable closed captioning with regard to backgrounds, caption colors, fonts, and writing styles. I can even have cursive writing! (Ugh!) Same thing with Dish Network. The captioning for Dish subscribers emanates from the satellite box however, not from the tv. CapTel...

A gentleman with Downs Snydrome opens his restaurant

I was believing the stereotype that people with Down's Syndrome were always mentally retarded. Inspiring story! Saw it on tv a week or two ago. As a sports fan,I also am wondering whether any Special Olympians have reached world-class level in "open" competition in any sport or do the...

    CapTel phones (or similar devices)

Anyone have experience with the new CapTel 840I? It can connect either wirelessly or with ethernet cable (via router). Captions both outgoing and incoming with a direct dial. High speed internet required;no dial-up. Thanks! P.S.-Am enjoying my CapTel 800!
