HOH people who recieved an CI, pls look here!

Pacman, some profoundly deaf people get enough hearing with a hearing aid. But then again others do not. Lilly didnt get enough amplification from them, so, if she was ever going to develop the ability to hear, the CI was/is the best option.

What are your Pros or Cons on this?

"will those CI children ever get to see how beautiful ASL is?" Shel, STOP making these statements! On this site alone, how many parents have told you repeatedly, that we are teaching our CI chilren sign? This statement is simply not accurate. And I find it biased. Sure, you can say, that the...

    Ashley's CI surgery

If memory serves correctly, didnt you decide to get the BTE Freedom for her? If so, I believe they coem with a rechargeable battery. When Lilly had her second CI activated, they gave us a little NIMD rechargeable battery pack that fits in the BTE battery holder, and a little charger for it.

    What did this mean?

Thanks everyone! After looking at the two words in the ASL Browser, Im pretty sure it was Like. As I said, my signing ability is very limited, and it is very obvious. Im thinking that he signed like, in an effort to keep it simple for me. Liebelling, Thank you. I am a firm believer in giving...

Advice on hoh first year university!!!

Litalia, as Jillio said, be insistant. You must advocate for yourself. Educate yourself of the rights you have, and use them. Do this quickly! Do not let yourself fall behind. Find out your rights, notify the school with what you need IN WRITING. keep copies, and if necessary, raise holy hell to...

    What did this mean?

That could be it. As I said, the conversation took place car to truck. I drive a truck that sits higher than cars. He was in a smaller 2 door mistubishi eclise (or something like that) the angle we were at was a little odd to be signing for me. Thank you

    What did this mean?

I hope it wasnt. While I do not know what he said. His body language didnt seem offensive. He seemed to be more friendly. Besides, if he was signing someothing like that, that wouldnt make sense. It is quite obvious that, by my sign abitily, that I am hearing, and learning the language. For him...

Pacman, Lilly used a Widex digital in each ear. I forgot the model number, but they were pretty powerful HAs.

    What did this mean?

OK, As some know, I am learning sign. I was taking our new puppy (13 week old standard poodle, who is going to be trained as a hearing dog for my daughter) to be dropped off and get groomed, then I had a meeting to go to at work. Anyway, while at a stop light, a car pulled up next to me. I...

    PBS "Through Deaf Eyes"

I missed the first half, but my wife saw it. From what I saw of the second half of the show, it was very good. I do want to watch it again on a replay. I will have to check the schedule. I really loved the short films made by the deaf film makers. I would love to track down a deaf theater in...

What are your Pros or Cons on this?

Most here know my opinion. I feel alot like Drews dad. As a parent, we HAVE to make decision for our children. The decision to implant or not implant is the same. I chose to implant Lilly. When her other ear suffered a further hearing loss, where she no longer got any benifit from the HA, we had...

HOH people who recieved an CI, pls look here!

Liebeling, Ha users and CI users require different things mecically speaking. That is why they are treated differently. The only things they have in common are the fact they they are used on deaf/hoh people, and they help the users hear. Also, Let me see if I understood your post correctly...

    Feelings on Cochlear implants

Going back to the military aspect of this thread. I saw a documentary, and read an artilce abou thearing loss and the military. There was some interesting info. In the modern high-tech based era of combat we are currently in, one of the most common solider injures are hearing related. Most of...

HOH people who recieved an CI, pls look here!

I hope this might clear up a couple things with hearing requirments and CI candidacy. It usedd to be that only severe/profound or profound could get a CI. Recently, they have loosened that requirement due to the "real world" factor. Introduce background noise and the ability to hear may...

    Feelings on Cochlear implants

Rock Drummer, Very well said! The main reason I am still on AD is to give REAL info on CIs to parents of deaf kids, or adults that coem here for advice.

Anyone who didn't benefit from CI or don't like it?

Rockdrummer pretty much said it correctly, the one thing I may partially disagree with is the loss of residual hearing. They are reporting more and more CI users retaining a portion of their residual hearing. The Freedom CI array was designed a little differently thatn the others. Instead of...

    Feelings on Cochlear implants

Ismi-"the CI just has too many potential points of failure". Sorry I have to disagree with this. It is not the CI that would be the [problem. It is the fact that without the CI, the solider cannot hear. I served in the Army for three year active duty. Based on my experiences, I am certain the...

    all set.... to.... go...

I love reading the comments about activation and new sounds. Lilly is not yet able to tell me what she hears and how things sound. But, lately she tells me if things are too loud. This is very reliving for me because I used to use the blink method. If I make a sound like clapping, and her eyes...

Yep. Talk talk talk talk non stop talking. My wife and I talked so much to Lilly, after she went to bed, we didnt talk to each other. Our mouths hurt from talking non stop. Now, Lilly talks non stop. Gotta love it. Like anyhitng else, you get out, what ya put in. I used to (and still do) take...
