    Hearing in a Deaf world

It seems to me that in the deaf community, there are certain aspects that are off-limits to hearies, for example, it's not kosher for a hearing person to come up with new signs. Now, I was born hearing, grew up in a hearing family and have no deaf/hoh relatives, I started taking ASL a little...

hearies attempting to assimiliate into Deaf culture

how did he give you the impression that he was deaf? was he trying to hide the fact that he was hearing? Or did you just make the assumption? and what do you mean that he was "impersonating a deaf person, complete with all gestures"? What gestures are "deaf only"?

    HIV and Blacks.

I could be wrong, but I think there have been cases where people who knowingly attempted to pass on HIV were charged with attempted manslaughter or something

anyone knows philosphy? challenge me if you dare!!

vfr is right, the "to be, or not to be" soliloquy from Hamlet is about Hamlet deciding whether he should kill himself or not. it sounds like you're talking about free will vs. causal determination, or some sort of existentialism. The problem with free will and causal determination is that...

    Should I become a terp?

that's an excellent consideration. Along the same vein, I've thought about providing tutoring services in math, when my ASL gets better

    Should I become a terp?

uhh.. god I hope you're kidding. in any case, if I wanted easy money, I could easily be pursuing a career track that makes buckets of money ($150k/year) for relatively easy work, but in the end, it's almost entirely meaningless and worthless to me. Providing a truly valuable service and...

    Should I become a terp?

hah, compared to the tens of thousands of dollars I've put myself in debt to study math, dropping about $500 on 4 ASL classes is a drop in the bucket. If I'm focusing on return on investment, the math degree looms large. Also, I wouldn't say I'm taking ASL as a "filler" class, but I have to take...

    I'm Travis. I do math.

Hi James :) When you talk about the integers modulo 3 (or modulo any number) you're basically talking about the remainder left over if you divide by 3. so, there are three elements in the set, 0, 1, and 2. so 2 + 2 = 4 (normally), but if you divide 4 by 3, the remainder is 1, so 2 + 2 = 1...

    fine art?

on the computer I mainly use Photoshop and ImageReady (and very rarely, Painter) but that one was done the old fashioned way with a brush and pigment in oils :) Then I photographed it and scanned the slide, here's a larger copy of it:

    Amazing TV advert

hah, that was brill :) the college where I'm taking ASL classes had "Deaf Deaf World" and they took over the cafeteria for a day and set up a "deaf world" with restaurants and banks and fake money and even a police station/jail. You were "arrested" for using voice, and you had to stay in jail...

    Should I become a terp?

I think is the part that is the hardest for me to swallow .. ugh. I can see the ethical reasoning behind it, but .. daaamn. What about being questioned by the police? Is it like Doctor/Patient or Client/Attorney privelige?

    Should I become a terp?

I haven't officially visited Norcal although I've volunteered for certain norcal events and talked to people there. That's a good idea, but I'd also be interested in getting some more personal opinions here as well :)

    Should I become a terp?

I'm about 4 weeks away from finishing ASL 4 and I have no idea if I should pursue becoming an interpreter, I'd appreciate any feedback and perspective to help me choose, thanks
