    Why your dog stinks.......

Actually, my dogs are greyhounds. They almost never get dirty. They have a dog door and a yard, so they are outside a lot. They actually groom themselves, a bit like cats. The group I adopted them from recommends not bathing them unless they roll in something. I can't manage them, so...

I'm Hearing and Confused...Need your help

That's great advice. Dont confuse uninterested for offended. A native English speaker might not want to spend time talking to someone learning English, Hopefully, they just say so and move off. If they act offended or are rude, then they are just that... rude. It isnt because they are...

    Gun control in schools??

Concealed guns still freak me out. But I live in DC...you get used to it or stay at home. I've never understood why anyone needs to carry a concealed UZI. I shoot at a local shooting range (hoh help there) and have to have a concealed carry permit to take my pistol to the range. It nevers...

    Free dogs are bad idea

Sure is. I got all three of my greyhounds from a rescue group. I had to prove less to get a mortgage! Dogs are like kids, only they can't sign....

    Why your dog stinks.......

Which is worse? "Doggy" spell, even strong...or.....cat box? Sabine, my greyhound, always smells doggy except for ten minutes after her bi-yearly bath.

What are you thinking about? Part VI

That it's exghausting learning ASL when you CAN see. It must be ridiculously exhausting to learn to speak when you cannot hear!

    Combined name signs?

In college a Deaf friend of mine gave me a name sign. He signed S followed by a B that was raised high above the head (eyes raised to follow the b shape) My initials are SB and I'm 6'5", so he signed my initials combined with the sign for tall. Had no idea what it meant until recently when I...

    Annoying ignorant hearing people stories

Hey...is it a case of: 1. "I'm too important to take the few extra moments to communicate with him?". If so, you might want to let the boss know that after a bit of time, it's not going to take longer...you'll develop the same shortcuts that Deaf and hearing always do. And. He wouldn't have to...

What are some good one-liners or humor to use when mentioning my hearing issues?

If I'm in a bad mood when I ask people to repeat themselves, when they do i say in a frustrated voice "Oh nevermind, I'll ask you later."

Do you sign to your pets?

So does mine. I think she always wanted to respond to voice commands, but voices tend to frighten her - she's the very opposite of alpha. She understands about ten signs and responds to them much better than to voices. The cat on the other hand just wants to play with my hands when I sign...

    Parent problems anyone?

I have a stepsister and step brother who are schizophrenic. The stepsister seems normal most of the time, but when she goes off, she is horrid. The stepbrother is alway a bit off, but rarely has episodes. I'm sure you know better than I that most of their "abnormal" reactions are based in fear...

    Newly discovered HOH-ness

Thanks Smithtr, I appreciate the encouragement. I haven't met many dhh people since I began learning ASL, but I'm sure it would be frustrating to talk to a student -slow with bad grammar and a limited vocabulary. I'm actually less confident knowing a little ASL than none at all...guess I know...

    ASL only!!!

Yes ASL happy good. I learn ASL recent. Only my ASL bad. I frustrate don't hear good. Deaf people frustrate my signing. Future try. ASL fun good language. Explain good? Only make sign know.

    Newly discovered HOH-ness

I guess I see ASL as another option. It won't help at work, but I can still cope...probably always will be able to cope. Socially I have a choice. I'm sick of trying so hard to hear ...what's the point. There is a large dhh community in DC where I live, so hopefully I'll be able to communicate...
