What Would You Say To Your Parents Today?

This is a letter that my mom wrote to her friend I think around August of 1994. "We took her in for an audiologist test (hearing test). The results were not that great. I guess she has a moderate hearing loss in her left ear and a moderate severe hearing loss in her right. She can't hear high...

    CI surgery scheduled.

Pretty sure your audiologist will tell you these kind of information and go through the process with you and your daughter on the day of activation but it wouldn't hurt to know this. There is a magnet in the transmitter which is what connects the processor to the implant inside her head. It may...

School punishes blind child by replacing his cane with a pool noodle

Not surprised. Schools are schools. Parents should always make sure their children is getting the help/support they need. I've had my fair share of problems - but probaly not like that with the pool noodle. That's disgusting. I hope the people involved is fired. -- This was like around fifteen...

    Cashiers/Job Hunting

I've applied for cashier few days ago. However the person interviewing me didn't really seem to understand when he asked me how I would do with noise - and I wouldn't know as I've never been a cashier. I just told him - in very noisy areas - background noise could be an issue. He seemed to...

    Reading lips

I taught myself (or so my mom says) to lip-read at a very young age. So I assume it'd probaly take pratice of course. Like posted above, muting the T.V would help - the best would probably be the news and the news reporter. Probably try it without CC (closed captioning) at first too. One tip...

Pissed about your audie, hearing aid or CI? Tell us!

I've had the same audiologist since 2006 and she's awesome. However I wouldn't exactly call him evil, but as part of this car accident lawsuit, few years ago I had to go to this law office (of the guy who hit us) with my family, and I had to get an audiologist test done there. When he said...

    N6, battery Life? Remote features?

I know it's not part of your questions but it was something I didn't know at first (it's a small change they did after N5 which I currently don't like so much). One thing I hated after switching from Freedom to N6 was the earhook. They made it so that they are detachable and I've lost one or...

C.I Users - considered Deaf or Hard of Hearing?

As a kid, I've been referred to as hard of hearing with hearing aids until 2006 when I received my first cochlear implant. At the time, I still thought I'd be hard of hearing as I still have a hearing aid in my other ear. In 2011, I got my second implant done and it's not until now that I'm...

What to do with outdated technology?

So my mom kept in a box a Phonic Ear F.M system which is from the late 90's. And not sure if it works, I have to figure out how to use that thing again. It seems kind of wrong to throw it out... but I'm not sure what to do with it. Keep it? Or is there people still needing stuff like this?

    To All CI users.

It's true about the unique experience. When I had my first implant activated, all I could hear was high-pitch voices like chipmunks. I was laughing for a good 10 minutes until they started to sound a little normal. With my second implant, I got the exact opposite. A little deeper pitched...

    How long did you..

I had pain in my right ear area for maybe 2 months but most was due to the magnet strength. I also had some strange problem with my neck after the surgery, and it hurt to a point where I stayed at the hospital for 3 days. My second surgery was fine. I really had no problems at all. No pain, not...

Music (Audio Cord) and Bilateral Implants experience?

There are two things I'm curious about and just can't make sense of it. I have asked my audiologist about the first one and she thought it to be strange but nothing that sounded serious. Thing #1: Back when I had my Freedom, I also had a audio cord to listen to music. It for some reason...

    Problems with cochlear implant

It's weird. I used to have so much ringing in my ears before I got my implant in (though it was a phase that started for like 2 months) And after the activation, the ringing just stopped.

Do those of you who are HH or with a CI have tricks to understanding the world?

Lip reading and visuals is best for me. I have dabbled into body language. And sometimes in morning, if my brother tells me something, sometimes I tell him - can't hear - but I can make a guess like are you asking me to shovel snow, or what to eat for lunch etc. If not, sometimes I just go...

    2 different brands of CI

I asked my audiologist about this, and while it is possible - have to keep in mind that you will have to deal with 2 different companies. If you stick with one company, and if you needed to replace something in both implants, it's probaly a much easier process.

I heard I can get a new CI after five years

I'm not sure about your case or what you're referring to exactly, but when I got my first implant, I was told it'd be 5 years till they would consider me for a second implant. And 7 years before I was allowed to upgrade my freedom to a N6.

    Stressed out over CI

To be honest, it's your hearing. My audiologist lets me decide on what's "right" for me, if the pitch is ok, does it sound too loud? can you hear me when I'm talking low like this. It's not right for her to keep adjusting to a higher volume each time, because sometimes the louder it gets...

    Cochlear implant experiences

Hi, I'm from Alberta, Canada. :) Not sure if it depends on age, and I've been told they do more implants to kids especially babies. I got my first implant done when I was 12. And I was told I had to wait 5 years till they would consider me for another implant in my other ear. But I guess they...

Who is scared on riding on roller coasters?

I love roller coasters - have been on one with 2 loops once - but the things I hate sometimes is having to take off my implants cause I don't want them to fly off. But my mother did same when I had hearing aides so don't blame her. And I never experienced screaming in these thriller rides so...
