Have Things Gotten Better or Worse?

Mind-boggling. I don't understand it. Really, to me, a form of child abuse/neglect.

    Why do you do drugs?

Living off mommy and daddy and hating systematic order is the definition of a 16 year old. ;) Either you're exaggerating, or you're a psycopath. My guess is you're exaggerating. Well, my hope, anyway.

Do you view being deaf as a disability or alternate way of life?

Well, a handicap can be described has just a barrier. People who're deaf CAN be handicapped by it. I've met a few. But, interestingly, it tended to be hearing people (sorry, but true)--often parents--who handicapped them and limited them. Once they got some independence they often found out...

    Mission Accomplished

I have big problems with Bush but the mission of getting Saddam out of power was accomplished, the ship's mission was accomplished, and Bush was pretty clear that tough times (he didn't know how tough) were ahead and the JOB wasn't complete. I'll fault Bush on other stuff, but not this.

Do you view being deaf as a disability or alternate way of life?

Personally, I don't think pride should ever be applied to an action not one's own. Nor should shame. I am not proud to be hearing (nor am I ashamed of it) because it wasn't my choice. I took no action to be hearing. My brother took no action to be deaf. He's not proud of it or ashamed of...

Do you view being deaf as a disability or alternate way of life?

Emailed my brother about this one and was telling him what I said. I asked him if I could post here some of his comments, and he gave his permission. Don't take offense about the first line--I didn't paste to him what anyone else said, just the initial question. I think Shel and Bear are on...

Do you view being deaf as a disability or alternate way of life?

Okay, I'm gonna get myself in some trouble here now. :) Technically, it's a disability. Hearing is an ability that most people (most animals, even) have. The absence of that ability in the deaf makes deafness a disability. My guess is that most people (not all, but most) who would seek...

Have Things Gotten Better or Worse?

I used to think this of Josh's mom at first, because her signing never progressed passed what she needed to talk to a child. Then he explained that he moved to a farther school when he was 12, and her sign skill stopped there because that's when they stopped talking as much as he got older...

    How do you sign "just"?

Judging by your avitar, do you play CoH? Just curious. But--yes, you're right. Funny, to avoid confusion, when signing I'd probably mouth "exactly" instead of "just" when signing "just what I wanted" to avoid my small hearing brain being confused. I often change my English sentence...

Wow! I Have surgery Tomorrow! This Is It!

Franz K, Good luck to you. Just weigh the best and worse case possibilities, and see if you could live with the worst outcome, I guess. Chances are that won't happen, but any proceedure is a gamble. I've heard people describe the CI's sound as what a mini-casette recorder sounds like...

    Who is single here?

Heh. Thanks. You're not offering as a foreign bride, are you? ;) My biggest fear is meeting someone, falling for her, getting married, having kids, and then finding out it wasn't right and we fall out of love. I've seen it happen with friends too often. But I think I'll find someone...

    How do you sign "just"?

I use the same sign as for only. Index finger up, first facing outward, then turned inward. You should be able to see it here: http://commtechlab.msu.edu/SITES/ASLWEB/J/W1941.htm And this site in general is good: ASL Browser

You cannot hear with CI .. ??

How old is he? Tell him about my brother. He is profoundly deaf, doesn't speak, doesn't read lips, and has a bachelors degree in English from ECU, and next week gets his bachelors in Special Education from Michigan State University. He's worked for the post office as a mail carrier, building...
