    Deaf Drivers in the World

My mother is really hard of hearing (just don't try to tell her that she is..) and has been driving for years. Despite that she can’t tell what direction a sound is coming from (when she hears it) and she argues with the guy in like every drive- through. I myself will not stop driving when my...

    Hero's new Deaf hero.

Ok, I know this is a bit delayed, but I kind of wanted to see where the writers were going with this. Anyways, I was thinking about the episode that had the new girl on it that is deaf. They are just touching on her story so far, but that is typical of hero's. Introduce a new hero, show a...

Question - Is knowing the lyrics essential to music

I would say that it would depend on the song. Some songs focus on the lyrics like ballads. While others it is less of what is said, but how it is said like Enya (new age/rock). Then you have the instrumentals that may not even have any lyrics.

    ??s for late deafened adults

This is a good point. I have to say I am still caught up in the distance thing myself. I will travel around the US for my job, but hate to drive more than 30-45 min for just about anything else. I will have to work on this, I have to say that the classes for my sign are on the other side of...

    ??s for late deafened adults

Well, I don’t know if I would count, since I still have some of my hearing.. I learned I was late (as in 3 months ago) HoH.. I have started learning ASL, mostly from videos (signing time), web sites (AD, ASL Pro, ect), and have been to one hearing/Deaf meet up (more to come, missed this month...

    Communicating in the middle

I think I know what you mean. I am kind of new to the deaf community, and still have a good amount of my hearing still. I can keep up with one-one but have to think about what they are saying, often cross-checking it with what I see on their lips (I am not very good with lip reading btw). But...

    Adjustment to late onset deafness

Hum, that is where my loss is too, it is subtle, -10ish tell about 8k, then it goes up to normal hearing. So everything but the annoying sounds are dimmed down. When I read about others loss, it always seems the other way around; they have the lower freq, but no high. I thought I was the only...

    Left handed Signer

See, most leftie's tend to become ambidextrous due to necessity. When you go shopping for scissors for example, you find right handed in 10,000 color/shape combos. You have to look in the far back, under a rock to find left handed ones that are available in ONE color/shape and if you are LUCKY...

    Left handed Signer

Ok, I am left handed and I have noticed that as I learn sign I am torn from using my left or my right hand, sometimes I tend to rotate. Has anyone else that is left handed run into this?.. It reminds me of when I was a kid learning to use scissors, or learning to write. I am wondering how...

    ASL student attending Deaf event

I feel you Dogmom. I just went to my first Deaf social and did the same. If I knew a sign, I would sign it. If not, I would ask what the sign was for that word. The guy I was signing too worked with me and asked me to lip or speak as I signed. At first I was worried about “speaking with...

    glee tonight

School for the D/deaf on Glee (and a blurb about Kay's) I am not sure how many of our users that are hearing or HoH (like myself) that watch Glee or have family members that do, but tonight they had a song from the school for the D/deaf that was.. breathtaking. I have not found the video of...

    Adjustment to late onset deafness

Ok, I am on cloud nine right now. :D I just got back from my first meetup with the hearing/HoH/deaf social in my local area. I can’t express in words right now how I am feeling.. It was so wonderful to meet and to see so many people signing! I just wish I could have stayed longer. Even...

Family members being sorry that you're deaf?

I am close to this myself. The difference is that most of my family are HoH, but I am the only one that will admit to it. Growing up I thought it was normal for my family to be yelling to each other (not in anger, but just loud) whenever they all get together, I look back at is as funny now...

    Adjustment to late onset deafness

@dogmom ya, I figured that they would track what languages each SW knows and then link to them as kids came in. Maybe that is wishful thinking, and it is more like the DMV.. "you are number 64B.. whoever draws that number will be who you get.. ". As a side note, I have been watching as I go...

    Adjustment to late onset deafness

That is great that he was able to get through most of his school without the need for much assistance. This is where I find myself. My thought is to get back to school while I still can make out what the teacher is saying. I doubt lectures will be a issue, but I have a feeling labs will be a...

    geez

That, or like me, I have looked over the other posts and really have nothing else to do. I tend to check out AD while on calls at work with people that should never have/use/touch a PC.. So while I explain for the 2 thousandth time how to map a PST file.. I browse AD.. And yes, post in...

    Any of you gotten Karma?

For the most part, faiths that have branched off of Judaism (Jewish, Muslim, Christian, and Mormon are a few I can think of off the top of my head) do not call it Karma. They believe in it, but know it by a different name. Some faiths would call it fate, or God’s plan/teaching, while others...

Encourage Rosetta Stone to make ASL product

For me, ASL1 is 246 plus a $20 fee, ASL2 the same. My local Community college caps out at ASL 2 so any more then that I would have to look elsewhere. I have also read in the local paper that both are under review to be removed. Yes, it costs a bit, but the chance to work with a pro would seem...

    Deaf Stores and communities

I am still adjusting to my status of HoH, and am wondering if what I see with other groups carries over to the Deaf community. This is mostly towards those that use ASL.. (not to leave orals out, you can answer too).. Do you find yourself preferring stores or shops that have one or more...

    Adjustment to late onset deafness

Will do. I too have taken steps to find locals. I found a sign study group in my local area that are meeting next weekend (have been signed up for a while, just waiting to meet them). I am dragging my 2 best friends along with me since I am also kinda shy. I figure meeting some of the ASL...
