AllDeaf who DON'T go to the World Expo, July 2010

I'm soooo jealous of you all who are there. And thanks guys for reinforcing that I could go even with only a little knowledge of ASL. Makes me feel better about not going. :P NOT. One more math test, then a final, and no more summer class ! If only the expo was scheduled two weeks later. :P

AllDeaf who DON'T go to the World Expo, July 2010

I wish I could go too. I have a summer math class that lasts just a little longer, and I have to save money. Plus, I'm still learning ASL anyway. I guess it'll be better if I was more fluent, too. :(

    Marlee Matlin, "I'll Scream Later"

I tried to do a search for this, because I thought someone might've brought this up already, but didn't see anything on it! So, have any of you read Matlin's book, "I'll Scream Later" ? Opinions? I might read it soon.

Abuse claims at N.C. School for the Deaf

Yes, it is a stereotypical statement. I think it's more common now for them to have behavioral/mental/etc. issues, because the "good" kids are being sent off to mainstreamed schools and oral schools now, sadly. I talked to someone who works at a residential school, and she said their numbers...

    Suicide Girls

I know of one person who has made multiple threats to kill themselves, but they didn't go through with it. I also know of three people who did go through with it, but did not make any indication of it beforehand (with the exception of one, who told someone he planned to do it, and that...

    Last Movie You Watched?

Sound and Fury! I just found out there was a follow-up made six years later. It's four years old, so that should be good to see. I haven't found it yet though.

Been in a relationship with a hearing person

Hahaha! I've never put earplugs or anything on my boyfriend to try to get him to see, but he's put my hearing aid in his ear before. He winced and made this pained looking face! Too loud for him. :P I just wanted to second what he said on how if he truly cares about you, he'll deal with it...

Been in a relationship with a hearing person

I'm deaf, and my boyfriend is hearing, too. I've just had to explain to him in depth with examples of what it is like for me to try to understand hearing people who don't sign or accommodate me in any way. He's watched videos with me (Sound and Fury, and Through Deaf Eyes) to try to get a...

    ophthalmology check today

My guess is that it's for a CI, or to just try to identify what caused deafness in a child (i.e. Usher's, hence the opthamologist). Maybe?

    Suicide Girls

Suicide Girls is a group of girls who represent the punk/goth/etc. side of women. It's like Playboy but for their subculture. How do you ask mods to move something? Because I think this better belongs in Adults Only.

Putting your deaf children in which schools...and why?

Oh, of course. There's an adjustment period. The same happens if you get a newer hearing aid if you are HOH and can hear the difference. I'm deaf now, but I remember when I'd get new HAs and would have to relearn sounds and listening for a while. Not to compare it directly to the CI, because I...

Putting your deaf children in which schools...and why?

The chance to hear it and understand it, sure, but since she is an implanted child, she should be able to process it now. I didn't get aids until I was 6 years old, and I am fluent in English, and I speak well. I had no speech delay whatsoever, and my parents never signed to me. My language...

    Research Study

Bingo. Why would it matter if your speech skills are better? My speech skills are awesome, but who cares how good they are if it's really difficult for me to understand other people? Who cares, as long as I'm getting a good education and trying to better myself academically! BTW, FJ said...

Putting your deaf children in which schools...and why?

This post times ten. I would have continued on my way had I never been TRULY exposed to ASL and shown its benefits for me. When I was younger, I thought ASL was for people who were TOTALLY deaf, or people who couldn't talk. Obviously now I know I was wrong. I'm not totally deaf, and I can...

What are you thinking about? Part II

It's terrible! He has the worst sleeping schedule. The other night, he went to sleep at about 6:45 PM, and woke up at 4 AM. Stayed awake till about 1 PM, then napped...Went to sleep at about 12 AM. How does he do that?!

    Research Study

Honestly, I don't care if kids in an ASL environment have a lower spoken language score than kids in oral school. If I had a smart Deaf child who didn't speak perfect English, I'd be cool with that, over a kid who wasted a bunch of time on speech and lost education they could have gotten...

What are you thinking about? Part II

I'm thinking about how bad it is that my nephew is 3 years old and sometimes stays up later than I do. Most 3 year olds can't stay up till midnight...

    Speech Pathology Student needs assistance

Question 1: Are you satisfied with your hearing aids? Yes. Question 2: If not, why? Question 3: Do you wear hearing aids every day? Yes. Question 4: If not, why? Question 5: How many places did you shop before you purchased a hearing aid? One, my audiologist. I did do research...

    HA and school

Yes, I wanted to go as a 'visiting' student, but they don't do the new signers program for visiting students, only for freshmen and transfer students. I'm considering working on my ASL and then transferring for my senior year or something.
