    Adjustment to late onset deafness

Huh. I'm really noticing how, well, medical this thread is compared to the rest of the boards! It seems like whenever I meet another HOH in adulthood or late-deafened person, we ask each other the medical stuff right away. Then we talk about that in great detail. The Deaf people I know don't...

    Adjustment to late onset deafness

@TXgolfer Why does your new audi think it wasn't Meniere's? And how could you tell it was starting on the left too? I'm asking because A. In NY you can't get HAs directly from your ENT or anyone employed by your ENT. I told the audi I went to for my HAs I'd been diagnosed with Meniere's...

Old ASL signs vs New signs

Now knowing it's a pun, I think it's funny too! I wonder if my sign teacher was telling us that because we're beginning signers, mostly hearing (except for me and a few other HOH/late-deafened people), and pretty clueless, so we're not likely to realize it's a pun. He specifically said he...

Old ASL signs vs New signs

Yes, he's Deaf. He's from Canada and went to a school for the deaf there, then went to Gallaudet. (The school I'm going to is Deaf-owned and run, and all of the teachers are Deaf.) Now, he didn't say the sign _means_ "shooting drugs," he said it _looks like_ that's what you're saying. He...

Old ASL signs vs New signs

I've seen that one too -- is it "Coke" specifically or "soda" in general?

Old ASL signs vs New signs

Is this an old ASL versus new ASL thing, or a regional thing? According to our ASL book, the sign for "Coke" (as in soda) involves crossing one hand over the body and touching the opposite upper arm with the L-hand. My ASL teacher very firmly told us not to do that, because people will think...

Why is it hearing aids cost so much?

Here in New York, no insurance that I know of covers HAs for adults. Born deaf, late deaf, doesn't matter, they're not covered. For kids, I'm not sure. Many insurance plans here will cover the cost of a CI, but not HAs. That bothers me a lot more than the price itself.

    Who the Heck Are You?!

I adore cats too! I have two. One is a sweet little moosh, and the other is mischievous. I'm a grad student, which means I have way less time for hobbies than I like. One of my hobbies is reading, and I definitely get to do that! When I have time, I also like painting, knitting and hiking.

    Fingerspelling speeds?

I do that too. I gather at least some native signers do as well -- I've started fingerspelling something and had Deaf people I'm talking with guess what I meant before I finished. They guess a LOT faster than I do though!

Anyone use Phonak Audeo or Widex?

Hey hey! I have a high-frequency hearing loss, and am looking at getting a hearing aid now. My audiologist recommended either the Phonak Audeo or one of the Widex m-series models. We're going to do a comparison test soon. I was wondering if anyone here has tried one of these out, and what...

    Adjustment to late onset deafness

It's not that all sound is too much, it's that some sounds are -- particularly high-pitched ones. Some days are better than others with that. At first it was all the time -- I'd be walking down the street and pass a playground, and the sound of the kids squealing happily hurt really bad. It's...

    Adjustment to late onset deafness

I'm a very social person, but I have started avoiding many events, to be honest. A lot of sounds hurt, so going out to clubs or concerts is flat out. Going to the movies is iffy too -- most theaters seem to turn the volume WAY up! What's more of a problem is finding spaces to hang out...
