    Sensorineural Hearing Loss and APD

My son had his annual hearing test yesterday and his levels have remained stable in the last year. The audiologist wrote in the notes that he has very good speech and language skills. I made a point of asking her to clarify in the notes that expressively he has great speech and language, but...

11 month old keeps pulling her aids out!

It is very unlikely that they are hurting her ears. She is being a typical toddler. All you can do is keep putting them back on, and try to distract her and keep her hands busy when doing it. She will eventually start to recognize the benefit as she gets older, and it won't be as much as a...

    Poll: Moonroof/Sunroof option

I voted yes. I just got a new pretty blue Ford Edge SEL, and having the moon/sunroof is like the icing on the cake. I pretty much always have it open. Even with just the moon roof part open, it makes the car feel bigger and brighter. I had one in my Acura Integra which I loved too. They are...

Something that TOTALLY turns the theory of auditory verbal therapy on its head

The fact is, parents are the child's first teacher and with that comes responsibility. Each interaction you have with a child is a learning opportunity. I think there is nothing wrong with making a point of giving, and expanding upon a child's language.

Something that TOTALLY turns the theory of auditory verbal therapy on its head

This article ultimately goes back to the importance of face to face communication when acquiring/learning a language.

    WVSDB- Using SEE?

Yes. There is no reason a child cannot become fluent over time with both English/SEE and ASL. Knowing one language does not hinder the ability to learn another.

    WVSDB- Using SEE?

To answer your question, I'd say that depends on the child. I used SEE and Total Communication with my son, and when he got a bit older we made the transition to ASL. He is able to understand both ASL and English with relative ease. He also has great language skills which I attribute to...

please explain to me about cochlear implants

If you do in fact have a unilateral hearing loss, depending on the type I wonder if you might qualify for a Soundbite. If so, the CI could become a moot point. Treating Single Sided Deafness Sudden Hearing Loss SoundBite™

    ASL for mainstreamed D/HOH kids?

Taking that thought one step further... Even for DHH children who have had regular exposure to spoken and signed language, they may have acquired good oral skills and dropped the expressive sign when engaging with others (especially hearing people). Just because they have generally dropped...

Why can't deaf people respect deaf people's choice of sign language?

This is a common misconception. SEE was never created to take away from, or to change ASL. It was created to better facilitate the learning of the English language that, in years past was not as successful as one would like. It was created in an effort to provide visual clues to support the...

    ASL for mainstreamed D/HOH kids?

If you continue to sign and take classes, your signing will improve. It just requires a commitment to doing it. The interactions with your son carry far more weight than you realize. If you sign with and around him, it most defintely will have a positive impact. As others suggested, try...

Why can't deaf people respect deaf people's choice of sign language?

Interestingly enough, the French signing system was initialized in the same way SEE is initialized often times.

    FM System in school setting

:hmm: Well let's think about this... The OP appears to be around 16 or 17 and is only now enquiring whether or not the school would provide an FM system. That is probably at least 13-14 years within an educational system- and apparently no mention of an FM system. I would infer that it is...

    FM System in school setting

How long have you worn hearing aids? If you've worn them for a while, I'm surprised your district didn't get you an FM sooner. The school district is responsible for purchasing and maintaining the FM system, and you can have it written into your IEP that you will take it home for use in...

Mothers of deaf children want insurance companies to pay for hearing aids

Why do you assume they aren't learning ASL? Hearing aids should be covered. Glasses are covered, so why not hearing aids?

New mama with lots of questions!

Well that certainly was a strong first post. I have observed both CSD campuses on many occasions, sat in on classes and multiple IEP meetings. So yes, the comments were "germane" to the OP. I agree with your last paragraph. It doesn't need to be either or, and as the child gets older the...
