11 month old keeps pulling her aids out!

It doesn't matter if "the kid is only HOH"... It is the quality of access to language around them. Just because they may have some residual hearing doesn't mean that they are "hearing" it correctly and in it's entirety. It is critical that children wear their hearing aids as much as...

11 month old keeps pulling her aids out!

The child probably has a unilateral loss, or the ear is so profound they don't benefit from a hearing aid.

do you think downs sydromes should be in Deaf school deaf unit?

Wow. I disagree on many levels. I'm sorry you've been conditioned to feel this way.

do you think downs sydromes should be in Deaf school deaf unit?

I'm sorry you felt your education was hindered because you "had some experiences with Down or another mental issue kids". As to the bolded above, only sh*tty people make fun of others because of a disability. It is not an exclusively d/Deaf thing.

do you think downs sydromes should be in Deaf school deaf unit?

The same is true in mainstream placements, with mainstreamed students and general Ed teachers... In a mainstream placement you can have 20-30 students, many of which have different needs... Some might be English Language learners, a few might have learning disabilities, you might throw a...

do you think downs sydromes should be in Deaf school deaf unit?

Why? Did you notice how you wrote, "not in the same classroom as us"? As if the individual with Down syndrome isn't allowed to be a part of your "group" or "culture" or whatever? It is no different than a hearing child with DS being mainstreamed in a hearing placement for all or part of the...

do you think downs sydromes should be in Deaf school deaf unit?

I'm sorry, I'm not clear on what you wrote. Are you saying you don't believe deaf children with Down syndrome should be educated with deaf peers that don't have Down syndrome?

Getting my mom to understand I cannot hear her

Wow. Your mom is so mean, it's almost unbelievable. Since you're an adult, you can determine what you will tolerate and what you won't. Maybe it's time to draw a line in the sand. Good luck.

do you think downs sydromes should be in Deaf school deaf unit?

Why would a deaf child with down syndrome be any less entitled to access to communication and language? This thread reminds me of an old one: http://www.alldeaf.com/deaf-education/100758-update-school-deaf-denies-deaf-child-placement.html

do you think downs sydromes should be in Deaf school deaf unit?

If the child is deaf as well, they have as much a right to access communication and language as the next deaf student- even if they have Down syndrome. It is the same as a hearing child with Down syndrome being mainstreamed part of the day in a hearing mainstream class. The "next...

do you think downs sydromes should be in Deaf school deaf unit?

Actually, it is against the law to take into consideration the cost when determining individual needs of students. It's not about what is cost effective- it is about what's appropriate for any individual.

Enrolling KODAs in a State Deaf School's PreSchool Program?

How did the transition meeting go? Are they currently enrolled in an educational placement? What is their category of eligibility for their IFSP (speech and language impairment)? What were their previous goals on their IFSP in regards to speech and language? In other words, did/do they have...

Enrolling KODAs in a State Deaf School's PreSchool Program?

I've seen and heard of CODA's enrolled in schools for the deaf and early intervention DHH placements. It can be done, you just need to be persistent. If I have more time later I will try to formulate a more thoughtful response.

I was truly surprised at their response to me. While I was only hoping to get a good source for one particular thing, I was offered support which means all the difference in the world. It will be nice to have some weight lifted off my shoulders, knowing that we will have people in our corner.

    National Association of the Deaf

I recently contacted NAD because I was looking for an accepted legal definition of a certain term, and I wasn't coming up with anything really substantial. I was impressed at how quickly they responded to me. I was further impressed in that they offered to provide legal support in the...

    thedeafcommunity.org controversy

The video was actually closer to 9 minutes, and towards the end there was a reference to "deaf militants". I think any time someone professes to speak for an entire community, they are doing so in error. I also think that it is wrong to have a hearing person be behind the whole thing, if in...
