Deaf child hears for the first time

Diehardbiker was the only poster who even made an attempt at answering my question, which is in fact, a good one. No one else responded to it, even after I posed it several times. I almost responded to your post when I had seen it with, "you don't answer a question with a question" but decided...

Asked to change swimming lesson classes.

Whenever I sign my son up for any type of extracurricular activity, I always let them know ahead of time that he is deaf. I explain to them that he is a multimodal student, and give tips on attention getting and communicating with him. It wasn't until he was older and could communicate and...

Grummer- what source are you using to get these percentages from? Or is this your own estimate?

:dunno: You'd have to ask her.

http://www.maico-diagnostics.com/eprise/main/_downloads/com_en/Documentation/Guide.Tymp.pdf "As a non-invasive test, tympanometry can quickly and easily be performed on patients of any age, from infants to adults. Testing only takes about two minutes. The objectivity of tympanometry means the...

Deaf child hears for the first time

Doing a tympanogram let's you know whether or not there is fluid or pressure in the ear. That is taken into consideration when infants don't pass their hearing screening through an ABR. Parents would be informed of such results.

I thought your children were hearing? Not passing the newborn hearing screening doesn't warrant an extended hospital stay.

Deaf child hears for the first time

When we found out, we were told that our son "didn't pass the newborn hearing screening"... Of course there are medical professionals who might say they failed, but what is being done about it? Is there something that people can get behind and support a movement better educating medical...

do you think downs sydromes should be in Deaf school deaf unit?

Oh good God. You haven't the faintest clue what I know, nor do you have the faintest clue what you are taking about. Contrary to what you like to believe, I don't take a "warm and fuzzy" approach. I look at each individual child, and I don't limit them based on a label. Just because you know...

do you think downs sydromes should be in Deaf school deaf unit?

What makes you, or anyone else think they know better? Every situation is different. The fact that I'm not a teacher doesn't make it so that I don't "understand". I know how it works. I understand the point about resources. That doesn't absolve the district or LEA of their responsibilities...

do you think downs sydromes should be in Deaf school deaf unit?

Actually, yes. People have essentially stated/implied that children with cognitive challenges shouldn't be mainstreamed. Go back and re-read some threads.

do you think downs sydromes should be in Deaf school deaf unit?

What are you even talking about?!?! Why don't we stop lumping students with cognitive challenges in one group? Is it such a difficult thing to understand that perhaps students have varying needs and abilities, and would benefit from mainstream placement, even if for only part of the day...

Deaf child hears for the first time

That was a legitimate question... What do you believe would be a more appropriate phrase? For the sake of clarity, that question bring posed is not a contentious question. It's a sincere and genuine question.

Doctors have a legal obligation to make risks clear. So, if the medical institutions are providing "their view of comprehensiveness", what is being done by the d/Deaf community to rectify that?

Deaf child hears for the first time

Are we talking about two different things? I didn't see anywhere that the parents thought it would "fix" a problem. Just that this new technology may benefit their child, and it appears that it has- at least to some degree. I agree there is no concrete answer... That is why I mentioned a...

In a perfect world, the audiologist would provide parents with all communication options. To me though, I see it as the responsibility of the LEA to provide that information, as they are the ones who are responsible for educating our children.

Deaf child hears for the first time

I know this question wasn't posed to me, but I'll answer from my perspective. Doctors/audiologists have very limited training (if any) in language acquisition in DHH children. Their responsibility is to asses the degree of hearing (or not), and provide information on assistive technology. They...

I'm certainly not judging, to each their own... What I was referring to was that it's odd you posted this in the sign language and Oralism sub-forum rather than the "late night" or "Penisarium" or whatever it's called. :dunno:
