This may sound like a very ignorant question, but I figure it's worth asking: Is it possible for HOH people to become interpreters? If so, what kind of modifications are needed? I'm HOH myself, which is why I'm asking.

I'm going with how the original poster described the situation, which is that hearing people switch languages not because they're more comfortable in another language, but because they want to talk about others in their presence. I live in New York, and people switch languages all the time...

I don't see this as a matter of depriving hearing people of the right to speak. It's about open access, and treating deaf faculty and students with respect. I work in a (hearing) school. Many of us are bilingual, but we don't all speak the same language. I would not switch into Russian to...
