    For Hearies Only

When I was fourteen I taught riding lessons and one of my students was Deaf. Started learning then and have been in love ever since!

    Sign Language Moments

One of my friends told me a story that happened to her when she first started learning ASL. She was at a Deaf social of some kind and immediately struck up a conversation with a Deaf man. She thought the gathering started at 7:00, so she was going to get there at 6:30, but as it turned out, it...

    Moans and Groans

I don't knkow why hearing people have such a problem with captions. I'm hearing and I LOVE captions! Sometimes people mumble or someone I'm watching TV with starts talking or some other distraction. Plus, it's much easier to remember a good quote if I read it as opposed to just hearing it.

Don't stop talking, laughing in class

My deaf boyfriend is an ASL teacher. The problem he has is people signing in class while he's trying to teach. People talking isn't much of a problem (it's an advanced class,) but in the beginner class there were a lot of bewildered students whispering what they were signing, which is terrible...

deaf people should get ALONG with hearing people

I, like Alex, have also found most (note that I don't say 'all) hearing people to be more polite and friendly than deaf people. I know that we as hearing people have our own problems, so there's really no need to point that out because that's not what the thread is about. "Practice what you...

Why do deaf get offended when hearing people....

I was actually asking a rhetorical question. =D I don't think it's rude for hearing people to watch deaf people sign, unless it's in an, "Oh, my God, look at those stupid people flailing their arms!" kind of way. I also don't think it's rude for deaf people to watch hearing people talk...

Why do deaf get offended when hearing people....

Here's a question. Is it rude for deaf people to watch hearing people's lips when they're engaged in conversation? In the same way, how is it rude for hearing people to watch deaf people sign?

    Fingerspelling.

Maybe I have some weird, unheard-of disease, but I love fingerspelling and do it all the time! I've always been a good speller, and I love the way the handshapes just flow together sometimes, like in the word "numbers."

"Oh, you speak so well!" and other annoying comments

*headdesk* That's like saying, "Wow, I'm surprised you, a one-armed man, can walk as well as you do!" :P
