SANTA ANA, California -05/08/2008 - Members of a group threatened with citations if they continue feeding the homeless in a picnic area at Doheny State Beach in Dana Point will file a lawsuit today, claiming their constitutional religious and speech rights are being abridged.

The lawsuit will be filed in U.S. District Court in Santa Ana by lawyers for the Orange County office of the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California, said the ACLU's Tessie Borden.

Members of Welcome INN -- Interfaith Needs Network -- served meals at the state facility two days in a row in February. On the third day, they were approached by park rangers who said they were engaging in an unlawful assembly, Borden said.

I've read about this unlawful assembly thing somewhere. Did these park rangers have red coats all tricked out in fancy brass buttons? White cross-straps. Brown Bess muskets?

wow! i never see that happen ... here in austin has alot of homeless ,, i have see many new faces! and have not see not that!
wow! i may ask them about it! good one!

I dont mind to feed homeless, do the good deed and as long they dont shoot or beat me up. Ok, i might be strong mind and trash smartmouth.

If peace officer come to arrest me for just feed homeless. Of course, i'll stand and speak up as politican: "You guys arrest me for just feed homeless, I dont even understand why. Let me tell you something, guys. Your school taught you to help the world and make a difference, therefore i am here to make a difference to help and for world. Arrest me is bull**** because this is society is somewhat horrible and needs to clean this up. What about you ship foods to 3rd world? Thats apply same to homeless become 3rd world to us, why cant we do same? Police are suppose to protect and SERVE, what is that mean to you? let me know when you see me behind the bars."

Thats what i will say. Stand up and speak up, no im not trying to be MLK Jr or Gandi.

I think they should stop looking for arresting people and help them to have a home like reducing the housing market, feature low income apartments, stuff like that. Arresting is no fun at all and they are not even thinking about helping the people, but abusing them. Shame on governments!

Im agreed with you about this.

I never heard of going to jail doing a good deed. I am really surprised by this story. What's going on with society to go to jail for doing a good deed.

Feeding the hungry is a crime!? ... Oh golly! *smh*

just like here in arkansas.. u cant sleep under the bridge or any place you wanted to. if you are caught sleeping- they will haul your ass to jail... i think thats stupid... if they dont like homeless to sleep anyplace.. why dont they find a permament solution like finding them a home or whatever? *shrugs*

i think polititcal have black hearts when it come to homeless not hving homes. i think thats pathetic. :(

This country is going into toilet since our politicians lost their basic common senses. We need to "reboot" our government!!

``We have been asked to provide homeless services before,'' said Roy Stearns, a state Department of Parks and Recreation spokesman.
``The park system we have is not set up to be an answer to social services'' but exists as a recreation and vacation venue, he said, adding that churches and community centers would be more appropriate as sites for feeding the homeless.
Wouldn't it be better to feed them where they are?

RicardDeaf, yes excatly what american need! or copy Eurpo as we become " a eurpo part 2"
