I want to find something to alert me when people ring a doorbell. Nothing hardwired. I was using this thing I got as a gift. It came with a doorbell and a strobe light reciever that I plugged in, but it's old, something might be wrong with it as it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't.

Looking on the web I find these really high-priced door alert things (sorry to keep calling it a thing, I don't know the proper name for it).

I was going through a hearing and speech center where I got an alarm clock for like 70 bucks. When that died (got stepped on), I found an alarm clock called the sonic bomb for 35 bucks on a site called thinkgeek.com. Pretty much I don't want to go back to that hearing and speech. I fear they'd just rip me off again.

I'm looking for something like what I have (got it opened as a gift so I don't know what it's called or who made it) that works with a doorbell and recievers that strobe and you can buy more recievers so that you can cover other rooms. I'm not caring much rather it's a strobe reciever or something you plug a lamp it. My main concern is reliability and I would rather not have something the size of a toaster.

Anyone have a good suggestion or recomendation or even a better search term than "doorbell deaf?"

Thanks Belle. That was pretty simple. Now I get to feel like a bonehead for not figuring it out myself.:fruit:

First of all, If you are experiencing problem with doorbell and strobe. What brand did it say on the strobe and doorbell. If it's a sonic alert, You might want to relocate the receiver like plugging in other side of wall in same room. Because sometime the transmitter signal can't reach far enough. For Example, Sonic Alert device only can reach up to 50 feet (distance of outlet wire behind wall to fusebox to other room sockets). Please do not plug it on power strip that have Surge Protector, this thing can remove signal from SA devices render it useless. Same goes for Laptop chargers too. So Don't plug it close by.

My house is over the outlet wiring distance limit and I had to find "sweet" spot for transmitter to work with all of my SA receivers.

I'm glad that you just avoid Hearing and Speech center. I know Audiologist are well know for ripping off deafie BIG time. Same for me. Like other bloggers says, check Ebay, Check Harris Communication, and other websites for Sonic Boom clock. YOU need to be CAREFUL to which MODEL of Sonic Boom clock. There are TWO kinds of Sonic Boom clocks. One DO NOT have RECEIVER built in, Other clock HAVE Receiver built-in. Also find out what "channel" is that on your doorbell and strobe if you have Sonic Alert brand. If it say Channel 1, you may want to ask seller of Sonic Boom clock if it's a Channel 1 so it'll work together. This will enable you to receive signal from doorbell transmitter or telephone transmitter.

Thanks
Catty
