How can it be
Your eyes can't see
The tears that fill my eyes?

How can it be
Your ears can't hear
My heart whenever it cries?

And, How can it be
You cause others pain
That you cannot justify?

My friend, when you call me broken,
I cannot help but think,
Surely you need glasses, a LISTENING aid, and a shrink!

Ya thinK?

How much pain does ignorance cause in your world?

If you would like to vent about an encounter you have had with an ignorant person, this is your place to do... Get it off your chest!!!

My gripe for the day is: this guy I know assumes that all Deaf people can learn to speak and read lips and that it is 100 percent easy. He doesn't understand why hearing people should go half way and learn some ASL,, at least some basic ASL... I keep saying that lip reading is hard and it gets harder when people have mustaches or there is bad lighting, or when people mumble or chew etc. So, when I am winning the argument with the facts, he just says, leave me alone, you're interupting the TV. He just has to have the last word and pretends that he is right about everything that he knows nothing about. At least if he knows nothing, he could say so. I think he is in deanial that he is just too lazy to care about anybody else.

Just ask him if he would be satisfied with only being able to communicate one on one, from a distance of 5' or less, in ideal lighting and no additional visual distraction, and still only be able to accurately understand 70% of what was being said to him.

I'll try that if he takes the time to listen. Thanks for the info... :) YOU totally rock..

All of the above is true, except the 70% is stretching it, even with someone familiar who doesn't start talking fifty yards away, makes sure there's no backlight (I do a lot of dancing and musical chairs to get around that), and pauses the DVD we're watching to comment. Otherwise, I'm lucky if I get 50%.

Actually, he's right. I learned perfect speech-reading in a two-hour movie where the deaf heroine reads even a profiled speaker with instant clarity.

I can also read lips of everyone in a crowded theater with opera glasses, while enjoying the music by noting the position of the fingers and bow on the violin and the puff of cheeks and slide position of the trombone.

I wish the bearded guys on ZZ-Top would sing to double my listening pleasure.

Your audist friend is typical of those who contend we just need to "try a little harder" until "they" come up with a way to "fix" us, ha ha ha ha ha.

I am a hearing person with a profoundly deaf child. My gripe is when people ask if he can read lips. They were asking that when he was an infant. I am hearing and I know that speechreading is very difficult. So anyone that thinks its easy to speechread, watch the news and then turn down the volume. Now, can you read their lips?? It's not so easy now is it?

You're right, that 70% is a maximum, but for the point trying to be made, I thought the max was appropriate!:giggle:

My gripe is that people dont believe me that I am stone deaf because I have such good oral skills. They tell me that if I am so deaf, how come I can speak so clearly. Anyways, because they assume that I can hear better than I say, they dont make sure that they are facing me or talk more clearly so I can read their lips. When I remind them, they get all snotty or impatient with me. It makes me feel like wanting to forever killing my speech skills and just pretend I have no oral skills whatsover.

Rheba, thanks for the kind words. Thank you for taking the time to read and respond. I wish that I could wipe out the ignorance that causes so much pain to the innocent.

I did a rewrite of my castle story. If you get time, maybe you could drop and leave an opinion. The attatchment didn't work twice, but if you read down one post, it is attatched there. thanks,,, Happy Saturday.
