It just seems way too long. I haven't been able to find the average encoding time via Google, because they all say the time will vary. However, from the few screenshots I have seen, most movies take less than one hour using 2nd pass encoding.

If you are using the computer whilst encoding, it will take longer, and you will also risk degraded encoding.

PowerON, yeah. depends on the specific details that computers have. But up to 24hrs is better than nothing, right?

up to 24 hours is madness. I would hate to doing in advance before leave somewhere to kill my boredom in travel. ehhh. no offense.
