CI Moments

I'm glad that you've had a great month full of enjoyable CI moments. I swear that next year I'm going to be good and get all my gifts in July rather than leave it to the last moment as usual!

Ditto for cards! I have a bad habit of getting gifts and cards at the very last minute. I hope they won't mind belated cards from me.

Yes.

Some accents are easier to understand than others. I can understand people with Mexican, Southern (I'm one myself.), British and Belgian (I knew someone with a Belgian accent years ago) accents. Indian accents are the worst for me.

Oh yeah. The news used to be the hardest for me to follow on TV without captions. I never thought I'd be able to understand the news with no captions.

I can't give up my caption!!! I just like to use it, but at least now I don't use it all the time. A lot of times I just turn the volume off and read, I don't really want to hear them exceptly the news since the caption goes faster then the newscaster. I can be done quicker :)

On accents, I give up! I agree with all. My in-laws are Asian and I can't understand them. I never could understand them. It is better. Of course everyone wanted to talk to me over the holidays to hear my "new voice." It was very nice just had to concentrate well.

I don't plan on giving up captions either. I remember things much better when I see it than if I hear it. Also, many spoken words will have little meaning to me unless I have a visual symbol for that word even though I can hear them quite clearly.

After using captions for over 25 years I can't give them up. However I don't throw a hissy fit like I use to when something I want watch does not have close captioning. Right now I am watching the movie Elf after buying it 3 years ago and never watching it, I figured I should watch it before it is summer time and there is no subtitles and I am doing pretty good without them.

I for one, am SOOO happy that the holiday season is over. I need a vacation from all the jingle bells! :)

Same here!! I won't give up my captions, yet I don't whine whine whine when something isn't CC.

First thunderstorm with lighting and thunder today. I was so scared by the sound. I felt my whole body shake. That sound is not just hearing it, but feeling it. It was a whole body experience - thunder is not what I want to experience again!

The two other teachers got a kick out of me! They forget that I am learning sounds all over again. In just these short months but have come to accept the CIs. I'm scared and they are, it is just thunder, it's okay. I said imagine really hearing thunder for the first time, how would you react? They finally got it.

Wow, you've never heard thunders until now? I have always heard thunder with my HA's but now it's so much more intense. Whoa. I know that growing up I rarely ever woke up from a thunderstorm if I am sleeping as I don't really hear it without my HA, but what makes me notice the thunderstorm during my sleep is the very loud ones if I'm sleeping near a window, or the lightenings. heh.

I had a CI moment today! I was watching TV & a commerical came on & it was about cable & satellite. I understood every word that woman was saying!!! That really surprised me as the commerical wasn't CC so I wasn't even planning on paying attn to it, but when I was noticing that I understood every word, I paid attention all the way til the end! While the commerical is boring, it still was fun to had that quick CI moment to myself realizing that I will understand more and more things on TV without CC! Yeah! :)

I heard something like thunder with my hearing aids, that sound was not the thunder I was use to.

Congrad on hearing the tv without CC. It is nice to not have to depend on the CC all the time. What I love is being able to hear the music in the background of shows.

Thanks! Growing up while doing homework if TV is on, I could always tell what's coming on next without looking up to the TV, becuase I'd recognize the theme songs at the start of the show even if I didn't understand the whole lyrics to the theme song. Like for example- Fresh Prince of Bel Air, is a very easy one to understand and I got the habit of "singing" along in my head, yanno? But now with CI, hearing the music on shows is much more detailed than ever, which is really nice to hear now. :)

I'll be seeing my audiologist on the 30th for my 6 mos post activation map, although by the time I see her, it'll be 7 mos so we're a bit late thanks to my sinus infection, which I am just now finally getting over and I've had it since Christmas! Ack. I plan on telling the audiologist to let the Dr. know that I want to discuss getting my 2nd implant. I've been thinking about it alot for awhile & I wanna go ahead and get the ball rollin' on getting things moving because I know it may take awhile before insurance approves the 2nd CI or wait awhile until we have a different insurance that will be willing to pay for the 2nd CI. I will keep everyone updated as I go thru that, just as I did this one. :)

I had an experience today that I think some hearing people coin the "chalkboard" sound. I was at work and someone was moving a heater and it scraped against the floor or the cubicle post and made this god awful noise! It startled me and I watched the person moving it do that "chalkboard" cringe. I asked if that was similar to the sound of when one scraps their nails on the chalkboard and the answer was YES!!

Its not a nice sound but I'm now part of the chalkboard club! :)

small sounds

I heard it, I did not imagine it!

I was doing a science experiment with my fifth graders. We were testing litmus papers. When I put baking soda with water, it sizzles. I could hear the sizzling. I was taken back by the sound, since I have been doing this for 15 years and it is the first time I heard it. One of my students, then said, wow a CI moment!

LOL!

Just when I thought it was safe from CI moments it hit again. I walked into our office to pick up some paperwork. Right there a workman was starting to drill a hole into the blocks. I thought wow, a new sound. I'll just sit and listen, so I understand what it is like.

Wrong!

If you ever hear a drill - get out, run from it.

I had to pop the magnets off both and get out of the office.

Oh forgot about this too. I never paid attention to the microwave, except now I can hear the beep. It makes a slizzing sound when it cooks food.

Ashley came to me upset the other day. I kept looking trying to figure out what the problem was. I then noticed her magnet dangling behind her. I put it back on for her and she went back to playing. A little bit later she came to me again. She took my hand and put it on her dangling magnet wanting me to put it back on for her. I was so surprised. My baby is growing up!

WOW that's great. Our children just gorw up so fast. I am away at a 2 week training on cochlear implant birth through 5 and I am just having such a hard time being away from my teenagers. I am not sure if I am going to make 2 weeks.
Wait until Ashley is a bit older and she will come and tell you broken fix it, which is what my son use to tell me when he was 4

My son never really payed attention to the lyrics of music, so you can imagine my surprise when he started singing the words to Outkast "The Whole World". We were in the car and I dang near crashed trying to turn around

this was really awesome .... I can only sort of udnerstand folks songs with a guitar and a single singer (John Denver...) I grew up to my dad playing me these songs, and know many by heart... but I can't .... and have never (that I remembeR) been able to listen to a song without reading the lyrics from the cassette jacket or in recent years being able to google them, and read/study them.. As far as I know, I can, and have always been able to appreciate music for what it is... I can hear all the beautiful tones of each song, the different instruments, guitart, drums, bass, flutes, etc... and so I choose my favourites for how they sound..

I guess it makes sense that I have always loved AC/DC for my favourite band! LOL.

Anyway, that is encouraging - still speculative on my part, I can only dream and imagien what it would/will be like if/when I go ahead with this...

Although many sounds are new for the last week due to my activation, I had a CI moment this morning.

I heard my cat poop. I swear.

It went like this...
*sound of sandpaper rubbing against one another* scratch scratch.

*PLOP*

Scratching the litter to cover it.

I knew it was poop because Mocha tends to cover her poop, but not when she pees (yes she's weird that way).

ROTFLMFAO

Whoo-hoo now I'm offically a member of CI moment club haha
My CI moment was when cc was malfunctioning I turned on to spongebob squarepant to see how their voices are, and the theme song was playing I was surprised how clear it was and I even sang along with it LOL of course nobody was home! (No one want to hear a deaf girl sing!)

And another one yesterday when I walk through the formal living room lead to kitchen I heard awful and loud buzzing I walked around house to locate the buzz and I found exact spot but I can't tell where its coming from I thought maybe fire alarm tried to poke battery open then now I hear loud "bing" noise I was like "oh no not another noise!" so I ask few people on my sidekick and later I come back down and I leaned my ci up to ceiling it didn't sound like it was from fire alarm, so I move around and heard "BUZZ!!!!!" from wall I was like huh? And found vent and I was like "OH! AC vent made that sound!!" lol finally it was driving me crazy and now I know it, I can learn to filter it out haha.
