MASCOUTAH, Ill. - Two hugs equals two days of detention for 13-year-old Megan Coulter.

The eighth-grader was punished for violating a school policy banning public displays of affection when she hugged two friends Friday.

“I feel it is crazy,” said Megan, who was to serve her second detention Tuesday after classes at Mascoutah Middle School.

“I was just giving them a hug goodbye for the weekend,” she said.

Megan’s mother, Melissa Coulter, said the embraces weren’t even real hugs — just an arm around the shoulder and slight squeeze.

“It’s hilarious to the point of ridicule,” Coulter said. “I’m still dumbfounded that she’s having to do this.”

District Superintendent Sam McGowen said that he thinks the penalty is fair and that administrators in the school east of St. Louis were following policy in the student handbook.

It states: “Displays of affection should not occur on the school campus at any time. It is in poor taste, reflects poor judgment, and brings discredit to the school and to the persons involved.”

Parents urge change in policy

Coulter said she and her husband told their daughter to go ahead and serve her detentions

because the only other option was a day of suspension for each skipped detention.

“We don’t agree with it, but I certainly don’t want her to get in more trouble,” Coulter said.

The couple plan to attend the next school board meeting to ask board members to consider rewording the policy or be more specific in what is considered a display of affection.

“I’m just hoping the school board will open their eyes and just realize that maybe they shouldn’t be punishing us for hugs,” Megan said.

Oh my dear *sigh*

im sure that girls need hugs from parents can ALLOWED! than school policy and dont get detention!

Ohh dear.. This is another example how ridicilious rules school made up just because they are bored. I would have my kids have home school if my location schools are like that.

That's totally fucking stupid!!! School policy SUCKS! I hope her parent convince the school to change that!

It's the same in our school we can only give A frame hugs which is like in an A the two people are the legs of the A and the middle bar is the arms. i think it's absoultly stupid.

A note to school: You're downright pathetic. There are no such laws like no huggings are allowed.

I heard about this story, its ridiculous  shows postive and encourgement at any give day and time. What if a student is sad or heartbroken can't hug? I hope the school changes the policy. People hug for different reasons, win a football, celebrate graduation and etc..

:eek3: hugs got for a detention? eh? that is sooo RIDICULOUS!!! It is just a hugs to said goodbye not detention that is so silly! and stupid rules ever I see it! smh

School's policy is way overboard paranoid and stupid rules!

This is naturally Friendly hugs ... not harmful..

Wha..a..*coughing* joke?

I heard about this... stupid!

These schools are getting carried away with all of these strict rules. No hugging. No dodgeball. No tag. Etc...

*nodding agreement*

My boys  students with different sex at school. It doesn't bother school because they know the difference...

Is harmless  a form of sex abuse or sex harrassment ?

It is not even close to being any form of sex abuse & harassment this is, until someone aims to reach someone else's genitals or I like to call it the unforbidden area.

There's many kinds of huggings. I'm sure it was out of joy of happiness between friends. I mean, it's practically common among us. Heck I do hug my roommate and friend numerous times in a day. She is heck of a hugger! :D

Yes I know but accord the article, I provided here. What would you say about this article? Is  for them is a form of sex abuse or sex harrassment?

So you ask me to say about this article, I strongly disagreed. I already explained my reason above.

How can a hug be reflected in a poor judgment and discredits the school?

Come on, It's not like they would be groping each other or whatever it is. A hug is a simple affection. I can understand that there are times people will get carried away with a hug but it does not mean that they would do it in a public setting. People hug each other for different reasons. It sounds like the school administrators are getting a little bit paranoid with the hugs.
