... like you are "cut -off" from hearing world?

My other thread suggest that a lot of deaf pple like to use HAs regardless of their ability to communicate via sign, and belonging to the deaf culture.
I suppose it's because hearing even just some sounds IS very helpful not only while communicating in hearing world, but being aware of any other sounds.
It's simply practical to be able to hear as much as one can.

I do feel very "cut-off" if I am not wearing my HAs.
I probably wouldn't mind NOT hearing anything at this point in my life if not for the fact that I communicate orally. That (communication) I need...

Not me.. I don't wear HA when I work at Vet or attended to Court. All of us are still involve in Hearing world despite wearing HA or not. Hearing people are not going to cut you off. It is how you feel, not hearing world is not going to cut you off. It is effort to be involve.

Communication is important key. Yes I agree with you. My parents took me to speech school when I was younger. Today, I speak so well with clients, families, and work. If deaf can't communicate with hearing people with voice. Let's hope that hearing people not being turned off and left deaf people down. but they understand the culture and be willing to write down the note with pen or visually thing which is great.

Whe I wrote "cut- off" - I mean it from the strictly a "sensory" POV - an audio perception only - like, I need to hear to be able to lipread.

You put on your HA-s -you hear sounds, you turn them off- you are "cut -off".
That sense.

Well there is nothing I like when wearing the HA or CI related to the hearing world. I will explain for two things, when I wear them and when I don't wear them.

When wearing CI: If I wear the HA or CI, the hearies would just come to me and questioning about my HA and CI, sometimes stranger would scream "Look! That guy have something on his head!", also that includes my families too as I already told you, they would just begging me to learn to speak even though I was just using it for fun, and also surprisely to the deafies too! They probably treat me shit or probably would act like the hearies, questioning me about the CI and asking what I hear.

When doesn't wear CI: My family would give me a disappoiment face, begging to wear CI, some of them treat me shit if I don't wear the CI. Also I usually dislike to go to movie theater without CI. Some of the CI users would look at me like I was stupid if I didn't wear the CI too.

But one more thing, I don't feel like "off the hearing world".

Oh yea, If I am in the hearing world and dont have my HAs, I definitely feel cut off. I MUST have my HAs and back-up batteries if I am going to be in a non-signing environment. Without my HA, I cant lipread worth shit. It is really strange considering how severe my hearing loss is.

I dont feel that i am being cut off by hearing friends... they know i can lipread.. i can speak...

A little further clarification - It's not about how pple feel about you- it's about how YOU feel with or w/o HAs.

That's exactly what I am talking about, and that's exactly how I feel - "cut-off".
I think it's because we were accustomed to hearing and talking first at one point what makes lipreading w/o also hearing so difficult...?

Thnx your response is interesting, but could you also tell me if wearign HAs or CI makes it easier for you to communicate in hearing world, or it doesn't matter?

Sometimes I think I feel more cut off from nature than I do people and that's not a bad thing! Lol!

Funny...from my CI perspective (when I'm not wearing it which is only about hour or two before bed), I feel more cut off from people not nature.

Well I'm talking retrospectively here but I think there is a time and a place for everything. sometimes, like first thing in the morning and last thing at night, I enjoy wandering around with no HA or CI. It's a nice way of winding down or waking up gently. I also enjoy going to sleep with no sound input.

However, when out and about, I like to have more sensory information to be a part of the world around me. Because I know what sounds give me, I really miss it when I don't have it.

However, for people who don't need that sensory information then they wouldn't miss it. So we are all individuals :)

Agreed! Not everyone feels that they need to hear what goes on around them.

While I understand what Fuzzy means, I just have a feeling this thread is gonna turn into another hearing is important and hearing is not important debate.

I too do feel cut off when I can't hear what is going on around me. But I don't feel cut off from people, I just feel *lost* without the sound.

As for talking to others without my HA or CI, I have almost no trouble doing that, as I can lipread MOST people but not all.

Like today for example, my Clyde *male pug* developed a bad cough, so we had to take him for an unscheduled vet visit this am. I ofc took a shower before the visit, and had to hurry to get out the door, and oops forgot to put my CI back on while I was busy rushing to get out the door. I had no trouble understanding the vet and her assistants without my CI.

Not everyone misses hearing as not everyone has had a chance to hear, so they don't always feel they are missing anything. And that is what I believe some of us need to learn around here. If you have never known what something is like, it is very hard to miss that something.

I am sure if one never heard any sounds to being with, one does not miss anything,
but I am talking about this particular instance when somebody is either HAs or CI user, and what is he/she experiencing when the devices are taken off.

I too enjoy my "silent time", so much so I don't like to be bothered in the morning on weekends when the whole family is in - unless it's something important I need to have my "silent time" for a while. But still this is a certain sensory "cut -off".
Like putting on and off glasses. Now you see, now you don't...

And hearing is important, so why should there be a debate about it? How important - is an individual thing. For some more, for some less. Just as seeing is important but perhaps not the same way for everyone who is visually impaired.

Good question... I really never thought about this...

I used both HAs for many years until I quitted at over 20 years ago... I accept and use the sound but sometimes the noise bothers me example severe headache and migriane attack... sometimes I switched my HA off for my peace...

I quitted... I feel peaceful... I really never thought how much I miss the sounds or feel being "cut off" until your thread here.

My deaf brother says that when he wore HAs, he felt anxiety and distracted. He hasnt worn them in a long time and still can interact with hearing people. Of course, like me, he prefers to be in a signing environment than a non signing one.

The world does NOT only belongs to the hearing, the world belongs to everyone hears or not.

I don't think the word 'cutting off' seem to fit because nobody must hear to be a very much apart of the world, You must know how to communcate. Even there's spanish language presented in the USA does that mean those spanish people have to learn English to be a part of the world? The answer is no.

So, I don't see the point of feeling cut off or being left out.

Same here. I carry my back-up batteries on my key chain. I need my HAs whenever I have to talk to somebody that doesn't sign. I can't read lips alone or hear alone. I drive with my HAs turned off as I don't like to hear noises while driving. Ditto for staying at home alone - I remove HAs to make sure they last long as possible and I just don't like to be spooked by house noises. Like Shel90, I'd rather be in the Deaf world as I feel far more comfortable there.

Nods. I like being able to hear stuff. It was hard not wearing my HA even though it was almost impossible to wear it due to recruimet.

However, there are times when I need moments of silence so I don't wear the CI but I try to limit that though.
