I'm asking this for a friend with a teenager at home. The family shares one PC.

Do you recommend Limewire download for the family PC?

Are Limewire downloads legal?

Does Limewire carry baggage with its installation?

Doe it slow down start up?

I think they are trying to scared people about limewire is because they want you to buy music cd not to downloading it for free.

My teenager daughters cannot live without limewire music, and since they downloading it for their laptops and it don't affect the speed pc to set up!

I had that before, and I noticed my computer acted up because of limewire. And A friend of mine warned me about it, and I deleted it and now it is better. I think that has virus. So don't download it. I know it is FREE and it is NICE to have something is for FREE. Maybe other suggest another music program to download for free.

If a family has only one PC, do you suggest they not get Limewire?

If the family has two computers, then put Limewire in the kid's computer only?

I've read some sites that say Limewire downloads are technically legal (because they are file sharing), and some say they are illegal because they don't pay royalties to the artists. Conflicting information is confusing.

Concerning Limewire, it's a good program to have installed, however, It also has a higher risk of viruses as lake tahoe pointed out although its not as high as Edonkey, Kazaa or Morpheus. Personally, I use Bittorrent(I have both bittorrent and Utorrent downloaded...) for my filesharing and the websites at the bottom here for my music, movies and apps. I think technically downloading the music is legal but there can be civil court suits filed for not paying artists the loyalties.

I use limewire a lot and they have there own virus
filter that is very good. You couple that with your
own virus protection and you will have no problems.

Spyware is a different story so anytime I run limewire
I also run a program that deletes all spyware afterwords.
The spyware that comes with limewire is all low risk.

The real problem isn't going to be the music that
gets downloaded it is going to be the videos. If these
are underage kids I would not let them use it.

My twins are 17 and any music they want I download it
for them

I suggest you make your own decision, some people have no problems others do. It is file sharing so limewire sets up its own place on your hard drive and other people can copy from this directory. I assume it is techinically legal though the artists don't like it. There was a similar set up a few years ago that got shut down and then limewire started. I do think its good to have good virus ware if you are going to use this.

Limewire is illegal! But I like to download many rare wrestling video clips and it will caused compter running slow... Limewire is best than Kazaa anyway

Thanks everyone. I will pass this information on to my friend.

All you have to do if you don't want your downloaded files shared is either move them do a different file or limewire has a couple of its own features that allow you not to share specific downloads or all of them if you want

It is legal to share anything that doesn't have copyrighted protection and you will not get in trouble for downloading.

The people that are gone after by the music industry are the one that allow people to upload from them.

It is surprising to this day that some people have more that 5,000 music downloads that they are sharing

BBNT is correct, there's even a term for the non-copyrighted materials. It's known as 'Public Domain'.

Most of the public domain materials are old novels and movies.

However, I wouldn't recommend using a P2P (peer to peer) software. I prefer to use a bittorrent client.

Here's a website where you can download movies that are free since they are in the public domain.

Public Domain Movie Torrents with PDA iPod Divx PSP versions

This is the most popular bittorrent client (software) used to download movies, novels and music.

µTorrent - The Lightweight and Efficient BitTorrent Client

How it works is to go to a website where they feature torrents, they are often just a few KBs each. They don't feature the actual movie or anything. They just bring you to the seeders.

Seeders are the people who have the files and are sharing it with the public leechers. Leechers are downloaders, they leech off the seeders. Weird terms, I know but that's how it is.

I use Edonkey alot in past. Now, Edonkey is closed down due to Court order due to illegal music downloading. Currently, If you want to download files, music or movie off from P2P, you must pay to sign up for membership for EDonkey2007 or any P2P websites (all P2P website had same signup website regardless which you pick). I'm not up paying for membership for now, but planned to sign up and pay Lifetime membership so I can have unlimit time downloading. I'm heavy P2P downloader for files, not music or movies.

BitTorrent have changed. It's files download are sparse!! It's right after Edonkey was closed down. But I DO still use BitTorrent for Linux download such as SabayonLinux (up to date) and some files that require BitTorrent to download.

Sometime I'm a seeders, IF I leave my PC running all night even if it's finished downloading and let it share downloaded files to others.. Other time, I wanted to use my PC for other things, once in a while I'm a Leecher. Whenever I'm finished downloading. I close P2P program asap and delete "file sharing" file list. It was neccessary to do that sometime to speed up downloading and uploading when I need to use P2P. I've downloaded 3.2GB file (Ubisoft Myst:: End Of Age) through my former Everest cable network which was sloooow going and took me 2 days!!!! Sux.. Now my Road Runner can get it done in 3 hours! LOL

Use Antivirus excusively due to trojan horse virus and many other virus hidden in files. I use my old PC for downloading. If virus screws my PC, I just simply re-install XP. Sometime I let it go free and see what it could do on my old PC LOL. Scan for virus and also test install and run on old PC before you use it on other PC for safe side.

So I've heard Limewire. I planned to let my daughter know cuz she love music. I would swap hard drive to let her use her own XP along with Limewire LOL.
