Laptop Question--

I am looking at a certain Acer Laptop - the features on the specific model I am looking at are this:

Windows Vista Home Basic OS
Mobile Intel 940GML Express chipset with integrated 3D graphics featuring Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950
Intel High Definition audio support
Two built-in Acer 3DSonic stereo speakers
Built-in microphone
WLAN: Acer InviLink 802.11b/g Wi-Fi certified solution, supporting Acer SignalUp wireless technology
Modem: 56K ITU V.92 with PTT approval
88-key keyboard
PC card slot (Type II)
5-in-1 card reader (SD, MMC, MS, MS PRO, xD)
Three USB 2.0 ports
External display(VGA)port
S-video/TV output
Headphones/speaker/line-out jack with S/PDIF support
Microphone input
Line input
Ethernet (RJ-45) port
Modem (RJ-11) port

Because I have DSL at the house - would I get 56K speeds or would I get DSL speeds? I am certain with the pre-installed modem I would need to plug directly into the phone jack correct???
Or would I need to obtain another external modem from the ISP and route through that before plugging into the wall? We do not have Ethernet, we are strictly DSL.

Right now I dont need alot of computer, but I may add a couple of programs later such as Adobe Photoshop, and smaller programs such as AVG-Free and ZoneAlarm for Internet protection. I absolutely hate Norton Anti-Virus, it clogs up the computer 99% of the time. And also Quicktime and a movie-maker program possibly. Hopefully with the upgrade to Windows Vista I shall be able to use ASL Pro to learn more ASL - thats my most recent reason for wanting an upgrade to Vista.

Dixie, DSL works over the phone lines but you woulld not use a modem in the computer. The way it works is there is a DSL modem that connects to your phone jack. From there you will run an ethernet connection to your computer's network connection. Looks like a phone jack but it's wider. The other thing about DSL is to make sure that anything that is plugged into your phone lines (except the DSL modem) has a filter on it. When you order DSL the installer should help you get it set up and running. Good luck!!

I'm DSL user here, phone line is hooked on wall to DSL modem then use ethernet from DSL modem to computer or other device that support with RJ-45, don't use or bother on dial-up, you need hook intio ethernet (RJ-45) or you can get router (wireless and wired) if you need it.

When use on ethernet then you will get DSL speed, not dial-up or 56k, also DSL don't need dial or re-dial before start use, that totally different.
 
Yes, you do have an ethernet for a DSL or a cable modem. You do not need the 56K port unless you have a dial-up service.

If you have two computers, you will need a router to connect the DSL/Cable modem for online.
 
A DSL modem has two ports. You plug a main telephone wire into a DSL modem. The 2nd port on DSL modem (ethernet) goes to your computer. That's all.

If your DSL modem has another port - USB. Don't use the USB because it makes your online very slow. Ethernet is the best way to make online faster. Hope that helps.

A home telephone wire and ethernet wire are very different. Regular phone wire has 3 or 2 copper wires if you see the clear plastic square box. The ethernet has 6 copper wires (I think 6). You will need a telephone wire that has three copper wires to hook up your DSL modem.

At a computer store, there are two different ethernet wires. It is confusing for you to understand it. You can ask someone for help before you buy one.

1st ethernet contains twisted wires.
2nd ethernet contains bridge wires (like parallel wires).

I buy an extra ethernet wire CAT-5 which is better than CAT-3 because of the better speed. I think that CAT-3 is "old technology." Lowes sells ethernet, and it is cheaper than other stores so far I know of.

I have 3 ports, phone jack, ethernet and USB.

Not true, I had use on USB before and no difference on speed.

It's called gateway, that where router feature is built-in.

Most DSL modem has DHCP server and other features, same as router but few do have wireless built-in.
 
ah so looks like I need to purchase a 2nd DSL modem for the laptop from the phone company. How much do these things go for anyway on avg???


Since we already have DSL connected at the house anyway - I think a 2nd modem is all I need , correct??

No, You need get router like Dlink or Linksys, that allowed mult-PC to connected at same time.

Don't bother to get 2nd modem, you will be charge at twice, as require 2 phone line and that can be more expensive for nothing.
 
Pacman - I believe you would need to pay up at least five dollars more per month to hook up DSL on multiple computers. When I had DSL by BellSouth (now AT&T) I had to pay more for that.

Oh I see. The Cox Company (cable) gave me a Motorola SBV5220 SURFboard. I also bought a D-Link 604 router. I guess that it is too late for me to ask the company about a modem with 4 ports.
 
So far I know only couple cable modems offers 4 ports, around half of DSL modems offers that as well. I wouldn't go for built in router/gateway in modem. Yours is just fine and acceptable. Whats more, you got better control with this way. :)

Whit!!?? That's plain wrong. I never seen anyone paying extra for DSL on multiple computers. Had friend who have exactly the same service. He hooked up Dlink (belongs to Sorenson) from DSL modem and hooked 3 computers from it plus VP100 (2 computers and one wireless router daisy chained for 3rd computer). He pays just the same flat fees!! So what's the difference it make. He's not cheating tho. It's the way it is...

Heey!! Welcome to Acer world. I have Acer Aspire 5040 wlmi laptop w/ 15.4 WXGA wide screen. It have AMD 64 Turion processor. Mine is a year old soon. Been good to me for long time. I would recommend you get Dual processor like Intel Duo. Battery tend to last longer than my AMD 64 Turion processor. BUT I have NO Idea about newer Acer w/ newer AMD Turion 64 x2 processors. As for graphic chipset. I DO have issue with Intel GMA 950 graphic chipset cuz it don't play well with games or photoshop. I would recommend getting Acer laptop with ATI or Nvidia graphic chipset that you can reconfigures it's shared graphic memory from 64mb to whatever. Or some do have built in 128mb or 256mb graphic memory that separate from DDR2 ram memory to allow fuller graphic speed and slickness on Vista. So browse through Acer laptop models cuz they offer AMD or Intel processors on some models. So do your homework.

DSL issue is that you must have DSL modem and wireless router for you to roam around the building w/ laptop. Connecting directly from DSL telephone jack to laptop's modem would'nt give you the speed of ethernet. So DSL Modem is made for high speed internet over DSL. got it?

Your statement is based on router.

I means modem for each multi-PC, no router are used then fee will charge as twice more, that what my DSL service are doing that and network technician told me about same thing.

For example, if you have 3 computers then use 3 DSL modem for each PC, no router are used.
