Couple Fights to Name Baby 'Metallica'

STOCKHOLM, Sweden - Metallica may be a cool name for a heavy metal band, but a Swedish couple is struggling to convince officials it is also suitable for a baby girl.

Michael and Karolina Tomaro are locked in a court battle with Swedish authorities, which rejected their application to name their six-month-old child after the legendary rock band.

"It suits her," Karolina Tomaro, 27, said Tuesday of the name. "She's decisive and she knows what she wants."

Although little Metallica has already been baptized, the Swedish National Tax Board refused to register the name, saying it was associated with both the rock group and the word "metal."

Tomaro said the official handling the case also called the name "ugly."

The couple was backed by the County Administrative Court in Goteborg, which ruled on March 13 that there was no reason to block the name. It also noted that there already is a woman in Sweden with Metallica as a middle name.

The tax agency appealed to a higher court, frustrating the family's foreign travel plans.

"We've had to cancel trips and can't get anywhere because we can't get her a passport without an approved name," Tomaro said

Interesting, I never knew that in sweden you have to get approved to name your own children. Isn't it good thing that we dont have a restriction to name our baby in US? LOL.

It doesn't surprise me because I remember reading years ago about a couple who wanted to name their son Superman, but Swedish authorities said NEJ!

FYI, Nej means no. :)

Why the hell would people want to name their kids like that?

I heard about one guy who changed his name to Jack Ass and sued Jackass for copyright infringement.

Geez!!! Its parents' decision to name their babies, not the government's decision. GAWD!!!

I would support that some part, I don't want my kids name after the stupid movie or whatever it is. It is what parents prefer? What about kids' future when they become career. Should I said, "Hello, my name is Superman Smith" It sound like you are actually superman in real life? Something like that and I know one father name three daughter name after them is vegetable; pumpkin, pull something and melon.

I know one of my friend actually name is Muffin. She isn't happy with that name. Every time she happen went to job or got pull over by cop. They asked what her name. She said, my name is Muffin. The police said, knock off with the game. Tell me your name." She replies, "My name is real "M U F F I N" or should I said "MUFFIN""

In her history that she have unfit mother who is running business as whose and selling her body for sex.

Friend isn't happy about that and moved to live with Aunt and Uncle, they name her different and treat with her reapect but she still stuck of real name is Muffin. Some people call her Red Muffin, did it the cherry taste good? because of her head is red.

I would support if the name is not property and will asked them why want name and help parents make another decision about kids future.

I wouldn't be surprises if daughter name and say, "I would like you met my daughter, her name is Bitch"

I don't know how will daughter will feel...

Its about children protection.

I'm not surprised because it is also happened here in Germany as well. The parents gave their baby strange name after their pets, etc. which is not acceptance... The children might suffer with their names thru mock, etc. That's why they protect children's future.

Kids can come up with a nickname for themselves if they dont like their names. Or they can wait until they re legal and go to court to get different name. No big deal.

I dont agree with government or authority to get involved with parents' life by telling them what they can or can't do.

Lol that is fk up dude.

Does name called "Metallica" is protected under trademark or copyrighted? If yes then can't use that name (real name and username are different story) and just pick other name.

He can't do that because he need file to set on copyright or trademark but people's name isn't applied to that then he's fucking crazy, also MTV owned, Jackass is won to got name at first place as added to copyright protection.

True. My dad didn't like his name so he just used the initials of his first and middle names. Only his close family knew or used his real name. I also know other people who use their middle names instead of their first names.

Of course, real little kids are kind of stuck until they're old enough to pick a different name.

Why would your sister want to change her name? It's like she isn't proud of her name.
