LG has set the price for its BH100 combination Blu-ray and HD DVD player at $1,199. Available in the first quarter of this year, the company thinks it can resolve buyer confusion and push both high-def formats using Broadcom's chipset. 1080p and DTS-HD audio support are present and accounted for, but no word yet on other features, like 1080p24 or HDMI 1.3, but for more information check our live coverage of LG's press event and demonstration.

The exterior design could be better. While this may be a good idea on paper... but bad for HD-DVD in a big way. You see, if this player was to become popular. The major studios who are neutral to both formats may take advantage of that and go Blu-Ray only to reduce the production costs.

I don't think the HD-DVD should be too optimistic about this product. I wouldn't be since it's bad for them.

What were the designers on when they did the hybrid player? It looks like something that belongs back to the 1980's...

But its a great idea to combine both HD-DVD and Bluray in one device. Eliminates indecision between the 2 formats.

What if HD DVD/DVD combos flood the market and become more accesible? This hasn't happened with a few movies(mainly because these tend to be $34.95) so far, but I thought it a novel idea for rental stores to be able to supply HD DVD and DVD customers with the same disc.
Still, the number of studios backing BD is staggering. HD DVD is like the little engine that could... or couldn't? Hah. Only time will tell.

Not only that, there are rumours that Universal may be going neutral soon leaving HD-DVD with no exclusive supporters.

Not bad for price. If I buy BD sony player 999.99.. and toshiba hd-dvd 500.00

Overall 1,199 is cheaper for both formats.

Well, maybe companies may considering to redesign format again like Warner Bros made hyrid formats for blu-ray and hd-dvd can go for any players with hd-dvd or blu-ray.

Really I does not care which format will win. I do like both hd-dvd and blu-ray formats. I just care about high definition movies.

CES News: Directv will add 100 HD channels in year of 2007.

LGs combo HD DVD/Blu-ray player could very well be the killer blow for HD DVD. What's that you say? Well, the combo player fully supports Blu-ray's interactivity, BD-J, but the BH100 seems to have forgotten all about HD DVD's interactive features, iHD. That's right, none of it - no PIP, next-gen menus, user bookmarks, HD DVD downloads/updates - nothing that will "WOW" the average Joe. However, when our friend Joe pops in a Blu-ray disc, the menu pops with excitement and is accompanied with, well, PIP, downloads/updates for instance. Why would Joe buy an HD DVD the next time out when the Blu-ray discs offer so much more? (He won't) Is this player the saving grace for both formats, nope, but it may well turn out to be the saving grace for Blu-ray. Plus, with the $1200 MSRP, you could make your own combo player by getting a PS3 ($600) along with a Toshiba HD-A2, ($410 at Amazon) duct taping 'em together. Then you can sit back and enjoy the best of both worlds with enough money left over to buy some titles on both formats. We just hope Warner's Total Hi Def hybrid disc doesn't have any skeletons in the closet.

It's quite clear that LG is leaning toward BD and trying to screw the HD-DVD supporters over by severely limiting the features on HD-DVD discs.

I dont think LG is trying to screw anyone....remember that the player was originally a blue-ray player only and LG must have added HD-DVD at the last second. Im sure the second model will have HD-DVD interactive features...

And hopefullly, will be soon seeing hybrids from other manufactures like pioneer, samsung and denon. I heard the first two alredy have their hybrids on the oven...

What I really would like to see is a region free hybrid with PAL/NTSC conversion......maybe the uk models....

You don't think LG is trying to? I believe they are making the attempt to sabotage the HD-DVD format by severely limiting what it can do so that way the HD-DVD supporters may end up preferring the BD format.

In fact, LG isn't allowed to use the HD-DVD logo or they'll be sued because of what they're doing with this combo player. You can go to your local CompUSA and see it on display.

It's out now.

whats the point of being sued over the logos when you already know it will play blu-ray and hd-dvd? It would be fair to see both logos on the player in the future thou.

Because LG didn't meet the standards set by the DVD Forum when it come to the HD-DVD features on their combo player. The HD-DVD logo itself isn't exactly something you can just slap onto your video player, you have to get approved. LG severely HANDICAPPED the HD-DVD drive yet didn't handicap the Blu-Ray drive.

So, there's no way LG will be able to market it as a HD-DVD and Blu-Ray player... officially. They only can mention that it is capable of reading HD-DVD discs.
